Was just packing up a copy of ADULT CHILD for someone and threw in a copy of FAMILY ALBUM at the last minute. In many ways, they exist as “before” and “after” snapshots of me. It wasn’t intentional, but that’s what happens when you document your perspectives and experiences in song. There’s proof of who you were at very specific moments in time.
FAMILY ALBUM was one of those projects that sounded great on paper, but ended up being the definition of paving one’s own road to hell with good intentions. “I’ll have my whole family join me on it,” I said. “Family of choice, too,” I said. What I didn’t plan on, was how bizarre and difficult that would end up being, and also how strikingly lonely. But, I did it anyway, over the course of years—and in secret. I was signed to my first record deal at the time and was afraid that the label would own it and not let me release it if they knew about it. Things had gotten contentious over there. So, I made it across many fly-by-night sessions in family homes. And by the time it was completed, my role in the family had completely changed. It’s remained such for all these years.
Hence, ADULT CHILD.
From this distance, I can see FAMILY ALBUM for what it was, and also appreciate all the music for what it still is. Produced and recorded by me and Mario Quintero, edited by me, mixed by Eric McConnell and me, and mastered by Doug Sax. And there are 23 of us on there. That really happened. Check it out if you haven’t heard it!
And thanks for supporting this current chapter of my solo work. Proud as hell. And gratefully, gratefully on safer shores.
