All great leaders listen to their gut and heart when making decisions about their products or strategy. But because we spend most of our educational lives listening to an external voice of authority, it can be hard to know how to tune out of our head and into our inner wisdom when making decisions.

All great leaders and business people listen to their gut and heart when making decisions about their products or strategy. But because we spend most of our educational lives listening to our minds, it can be challenging to know how to listen to our gut and heart when making decisions. Mindfulness allows you to tune out of your head and into your heart and gut for inspiration and guidance, allowing you to create products and services the world really needs. Learn how you can be a mindful leader today.

MENTORSHIP NOTES

Have you ever heard a great business leader say, “I make all of my decisions by listening to my gut” or “I lead my organization from the heart”? Great leaders, business people, and entrepreneurs use their gut or ‘instincts’ and heart or ‘empathy,’ as well as their minds, when running their business, developing products and services, or creating new strategies. Mindfulness allows you to tune into your gut in order to hear what you need and tune into your heart in order to hear what others need and create the products and services the world truly needs.

GUIDED BY YOUR GUT

Words such as ‘mindfulness,’ ‘consciousness,’ and ‘awareness’ have saturated our modern-day lexicon so much so that these terms can seem confusing or unobtainable. These words are all ways of visualizing how to tune out of your mind and into your gut and heart by focusing on the present moment. People call this practice listening to your gut, instincts, or intuition. Yet, very few of us know how to listen to our instincts. Studying the arts or playing sports can cultivate your instinctual self, but we often set those skills aside when conducting business.

Your mind has a tendency to be absorbed in two types of thoughts: 1) Thoughts about the past or 2) thoughts about the future: both of which create a sense of fear, worry, or anxiety. It’s only when you’re fully present that you can tune into your gut and heart to listen for inspiration and guidance for your needs and goals. We call this experience ‘listening to our gut’ because when we relax the tension inside of our bodies and focus on the area near our pelvis, we’re able to receive guidance and self-direction. This often comes easily to successful business men who are in touch with their pelvis. For women, on the other hand, this can be a very vulnerable part of our bodies because of the ways we’ve been sexualized in our society.

HEARING FROM YOUR HEART

As you listen to your gut for what you need, you can also listen to your heart for what others need. This is the portal for you to allow your inner light to shine and heal those around you through your business, product, and services. How do you listen to your heart? Similarly to your gut, you can access your heart center by relaxing all of the tension in your chest and opening so much so that you’re able to know what others need. Just like with your gut, it can be hard to keep your heart open when you’ve been hurt by people.

As you open your heart by relaxing and connecting with your inner light, you allow that inner light or ‘higher consciousness’ or ‘inner wisdom’ to guide all of your decision making, now knowing what others need and making you a more effective leader. Think about your roles, responsibilities, or business and how you can open your heart every moment of every day for guidance and inspiration to be a successful leader.

Visit bsmartguide.com / mentorship for the full article on how you can lead with your gut, practice the exercise, and fill out the workbook on mindfulness.

Your gut knows what you need. 🧘‍♀️

But because “the voice of authority” is often an external or male voice, it can be tempting to ignore your instincts when it comes to your personal and professional life.

Take time to relax and breathe in order to check in with yourself every day about what your gut is telling you.

How much time do you spend listening to your gut?

Do you trust your gut? Do you know how to listen to your gut? 🧘‍♀️

YOU are your own best authority for what you need and how you can serve the world.🌎 But tuning out of your head and into your heart can be difficult when you’re told your whole life that the “voice of authority” is external to you.

1) Take a moment to breathe deeply, relax your body, and create inner space.

2) Ask a question about guidance you currently need.

3) Continue to relax by deeply focusing on your exhale as you move throughout your day.

*Be open to any answer to your question and release your attachment to how “life should be” with this topic.

Write down any thoughts that come to you throughout the day. 📓

Core Values of Leadership #5 - Collaboration

Being a leader means you collaborate with others by listening as much as you speak and valuing the creative process. By listening, you’re able to solicit feedback from anyone and everyone, while also filtering that feedback through the lens of your personal or professional mission. It’s only through innovation and evolution that we, our products, and services can truly grow. It’s through listening and speaking that we can engage in that messy, yet creative process. Listening to feedback improves not only your products and services, but also your department, and business model— even how you operate and conduct business. True collaboration includes listening and speaking so that you can participate in the creative process with those you lead and co-create with.

GIRL INTERRUPTED

I want to pause in order to address a common social and culture challenge many women face when it comes to speaking and listening as part of their professional collaboration and leadership. Men are 23% more likely to interrupt a woman than they are to interrupt other men. In addition, men typically dominate 75% of the conversations during a business meeting. Both men and women are accustomed to interrupting women when they speak, but make sure not to interrupt a man when he's sharing a point. After all, women were historically only present in a meeting to take notes or get coffee for the men in the room. What’s more, women are often not believed when they share their perspective, even if they’re the foremost expert in the room.

Years of being interrupted and talked over have resulted in two distinct culturally induced habits. First, women are tempted to speak quickly, trying to cram in as many words as they can before someone interrupts them. Second, women don’t speak up at all, thinking it will take too much effort to assert themselves or be believed. While women have been forced to overcompensate for the ways in which we’re not heard in professional settings, both of these verbal reactions undermines our power as leaders.

Look at the leaders in the organizations you admire and imagine how they communicate. You most likely picture them listening intently. When they speak, they use very carefully chosen and succinct words that they expect everyone in the room will listen to. You can begin to communicate this way today and command respect now.
