Spotlight ⭐️ Stefano Imbert

Stefano brings color, composition, and whimsy to every class he teaches at Hostos. His own illustrations can be seen on theater posters around New York and book covers. Students frequently comment on Stefano really listens to a student’s story to help them move through their projects. Check out his work when you have a chance!

Stefano shared his answers to some of our burning questions:

***“How long have you been teaching at Hostos and what do you teach?”***
I have been teaching at Hostos since Spring Semester 2017. I teach Illustration, specifically Digital Illustration II, Color Theory, and Foundation Drawing.

*** “What do you love about teaching at Hostos?”***
Hostos' students are the main reason why I love teaching there. They are very energetic, with a healthy hunger to learn new ideas. Their passion for learning new notions and techniques to improve their work makes the ideal terrain for an educator. I love the exchange of positive energies between teacher and student.

***“If you have one piece of advice for students who are trying to enter the industry, what advice would you give them?"***
What I always suggest to my students who are about to enter into the art/animation/graphic design industry, is to remember that the field is already quite saturated and it's paramount to have something unique that can carve your own special niche in the industry. Incorporating your strong passion in life with your work can only enhance the chance of succeeding in the business.

What does she love about teaching at Hostos?! Emmy shared, “The students are imaginative and playful—so fun to work with. Hostos Media Design is ALL about collaboration and community. In the spring of 2018, students from Professor Inmaculada Lara-Bonilla’s LAC 272 Latin American Film and Literature wrote film treatments for their own stories. Based on these stories, Hostos illustration students from Professor Catherine Lewis’ class illustrated film posters. The collaboration brought the stories of fellow students to the image-makers and the image-makers had the opportunity to bring them to life.

Alumni Highlight ⭐️ Hostos Design Grad Zaira Ramos is about to complete her MFA (!) at City College CUNY . All the while, Zaira has been a TA in 2D Design and Typography classes at Hostos to hone her skills as an educator and guide more Bronx designers towards their goals. We asked Zaira to answer a few questions:

*What has life been like since you graduated from Hostos and What are you up to now?*

Life since graduating Hostos Community College has been nothing but achieving success. I went straight into The City College of New York to earn my B.A in graphic design. From there I started interning for the Langton Creative Group, with Professor David Langton who graciously offered me a position as a designer in his firm and welcomed me as his Teaching Assistant for his 2D design class at Hostos.

*What is it like to return to Hostos to teach?*

Coming to teach at Hostos has been a dream come true for me! I am so grateful to be a part of the program that opened the doors to my career. I have always been interested in teaching and doing it at a college level has been nothing short of inspiring. Due to my opportunity as a TA, I decided to go back to school and earn my Masters in Fine Arts so I could become a full time professor.

*What was the most important thing you learned at Hostos?*

The most important thing I learned while at HCC was that anything and everything is possible if you are committed to your future! From the very beginning the professors that I have had have seen my dedication and effort to learn and have taken that drive and helped mold and prepare me for the real world. Design can be a competitive field, but if you show dedication and willingness that can take you farther than expected.
•••••••••••••••
Thanks so much to ZAIRA for sharing AND sharing her skills and guidance with our students! We sure think you’re amazing! ⭐️

Thinking back 10 years to when Hostos Media Design students had a show at a world renowned art museum 🙌🏼. The Hostos Design Lab was a two-week summer design intensive in North Adams, MA for twelve outstanding students and two alums from the media design programs. The student collaborative, with the guidance of two Hostos professors Sarah Sandman and Catherine Lewis functioned as a temporary 16-person design firm from August 1-12, 2011. It was a blast; it was fantastic; it was outrageously hard work; it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

𝚃𝚑𝚎𝚛𝚎 𝚒𝚜 𝚜𝚞𝚌𝚑 𝚙𝚘𝚠𝚎𝚛 𝚒𝚗 𝚋𝚎𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝚊𝚗 𝚒𝚖𝚊𝚐𝚎-𝚖𝚊𝚔𝚎𝚛. Recent Hostos grad Kevin Richiez designed this powerful illustration as his final project in Professor Lewis’ Digital Illustration class in fall 2021. Throughout the semester students attended group Read-a-longs as part of the Core Books project supported by The Teague Foundation and led by Profs Fabrizio and Marks from the English Dept. Kevin participated in the read-a-long for W.E.B. Du Bois’ 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑆𝑜𝑢𝑙𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝐵𝑙𝑎𝑐𝑘 𝐹𝑜𝑙𝑘. Others participated in readings of 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝐶𝑜𝑛𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑡𝑢𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛, 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝐷𝑒𝑐𝑙𝑎𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑜𝑓 𝐼𝑛𝑑𝑒𝑝𝑒𝑛𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑒, and Douglass’ 𝑊ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑡𝑜 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑆𝑙𝑎𝑣𝑒 𝑖𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝐹𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑡ℎ 𝑜𝑓 𝐽𝑢𝑙𝑦. The project brought some deep and reflective conversations to the illustration classroom while giving the students the opportunity to use illustration to contextualize the written word. What a great project! More examples to come…

ATTENTION: Unpaid community service opportunity from Hostos Office of Veterans Affairs:

"This will be a fantastic opportunity for our digital media students to participate in this endeavor which will include the President, Former President and Former VP SDEM and Channel 12 news. We need a student to be able to assist in the video recording, editing and collection of various individual video recordings from various persons and to assist in content collection of images which will be organized into a prerecorded video ceremony. This will air November 9th. As a result we will need to complete this video no later than November 7th.

The experience and the project will forever be accredited to the student. The student will be working closely with former Samsung Video Manager that produced numerous commercial videos for Samsung and other fortune 500 companies. The student will get mentorship and guidance from this professional who still actively works in this profession. The individual referenced has volunteered his time to assist our office with this but, he will need someone on the ground to assist in in the above mentioned collection and recording."

The D&AD Foundation have an exciting and free opportunity for BMCC students that are not planning on attending a 4-year college next year, but are creative and interested in developing their artistic skills this summer.

D&AD is a nonprofit organization that supports and inspires the advertising and design community through training, awards, and development of new talent. Our program, New Blood Shift, started in London in 2016 and just moved to New York. Shift develops young, creative talent through live briefs, training, peer-to-peer learning and industry mentoring through our 12-week night school program. The program will take place in Manhattan on Monday and Wednesday evenings and every 4th Saturday for 12 weeks, starting June 23, 2017.

Eligible students live in NYC, are over 18, and have creative work ready to share. This work can take any form: from blogging to poetry, filmmaking to Instagramming, writing music to painting, creating street art to illustration. We’re not looking for experts on the creative industry - the only bar to entry is talent and drive.

For more information about the program, you can visit: https://www.dandad.org/en/d-ad-new-blood-shift-nyc/
