“She was sure she found a carpet… but someone inside was moaning and moving.”
The weather was warm and sunny, and Sima decided to take advantage of the chance — to air out her “pillows” and “blanket.” As pillows, she used paper bags stuffed with sawdust, and for a blanket, she used an old wall carpet with a picture of deer. She carefully stretched it on a rope between the trees, and nearby placed a wooden bench covered with red leatherette, spreading her homemade “pillows” on top.
Serafima had been homeless for over a year. Her dream was to save up some money, restore her lost documents, and return home — to one of the southern republics, where memories of family and a normal life awaited her. But for now, she had to live in an abandoned forest ranger’s hut that once stood deep in a dense forest. Now, where the forest used to be, there was a huge garbage dump. John drove in silence. He had to reach the city by evening, but he wasn’t in a hurry. Barbara— a large dog with sad eyes — was curled up asleep in the passenger seat.
And then, just as the road seemed completely peaceful, something shimmered up ahead. The headlights revealed a car slowly making its way along the road. And then the car suddenly slowed down,and by the roadside, like worthless trash, a bundle was thrown out.
The bundle twitched slightly. Maybe it was the wind… maybe something else. A thought flashed in John’s mind: “Maybe it’s just a trash bag?” But something inside stopped him from driving on.
He turned off the engine. Got out of the car.
The bundle was dark, with wet stains, tied with a blue cord. And again, it moved — this time clearly and violently.
He reached out and lightly touched the rough material with his finger. In that instant — something inside moved so abruptly that he jumped back in fright, stumbling. His heart pounded in his throat.
The air was thick, heavy, like before a storm. From the car, Barbara began to whine and fidget.

MY LITTLE GIRL PICKED UP MY HUSBAND'S PHONE AND FORGOT TO END THE CALL — THEN I HEARD A WOMAN'S VOICE SAYING, "DADDY AND I HAVE SO MANY SECRETS."
On Friday evening, my husband, Mark, left his phone on the counter while he went upstairs. I was folding some laundry when my 5-year-old daughter, Lisa, came running to me holding it.
"Mommy, Daddy’s phone is ringing!" she exclaimed, swiping to pick it up.
"Hello?" she giggled. "Daddy’s not here. Who’s this?"
At first, I didn't think much of it — until she suddenly went silent.
Then, in a soft voice, she whispered, "Okay... but I can’t keep secrets from Mommy."
A shiver went down my spine.
"Lisa, sweetheart, who is it?" I asked.
She just placed the phone down — without ending the call.
I quickly picked it up.
And then I heard a woman's voice. Smooth, playful.
"That’s alright, darling. Daddy and I have plenty of secrets."
My heart sank.
"Lisa, what did she say to you?"
"She asked if Daddy was home," Lisa replied, pausing for a moment. "Then she said she’d see him tonight."
That evening, Mark told me he had "a late work meeting." I smiled, nodded, and kissed him as he left.
But then, ten minutes later, I grabbed my keys and followed him.
