Meet a few of the smallest and tallest members of our orphan herd: Choke the kudu, Izera the eland, Kimkim the bushbuck, the infamous warthog Mr Bean, and Twiggy the giraffe. Just like the elephants in our care, they enjoy freshly mixed milk bottles, cosy bedrooms, and a dedicated Keeper to love…

While we are best known for our pioneering work in the rescue and rewilding of orphaned baby elephants, our Kaluku Field HQ is home to a menagerie of rescued orphans. When they were chicks, Bam & Boozle – the ostriches – were dwarfed by Chamboi, the black rhino. Times have changed and…

Sleepy-eyed and snug in her cosy blue blanket, Kipekee is ready to take on the day! We think she enjoys these rare moments of peace and quiet — it won’t be long before ‘big sisters’ Kamili, Muridjo, Nyambeni, Mzinga, and Kerrio converge around her in all their wonderful, overbearing glory. Kipekee is…

Maktao is marinating! This gentle bull brings such a calm energy to everything, including a group swim. We rescued Maktao as a tiny infant back in 2017, an orphan of human-wildlife conflict. He is now eight years old and still very much part of our dependent herd at Umani Springs. Interestingly, his p…

Rise and shine with our elephant family! There's nothing quite like the gentle chaos of elephant morning routines. Our devoted nannies can't wait to check on their favourite baby - Nyambeni with her protective instincts and caring Muridjo, are both eager to start another day of looking after little Kipek…

Ending the day with a friend by your side — exactly the way life should be. Little Kipekee, our newest rescue, is surrounded and supported sunup to sundown. Today, Nyambeni is her lucky chaperone! This scene is all the more poignant considering Kipekee’s beginnings: Rescued in June, this…

Rescue comes in all shapes and sizes. Bibi - the buffalo - was found alone near Lake Jipe, with no herd in sight. Too young to survive on her own, intervention was essential. Now safe in our care, this weeks old, zoomies filled, bundle is receiving the dedicated support needed to grow strong and one day return to the wild. Every rescue is a commitment—not just to saving a life, but to securing a future. Support our Orphans’ Project and help give wildlife a second chance: sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/donate

New dawn, new day. Twiggy. the giraffe, marches to her own beat. Today she’s decided she’ll tag along with Chamboi, a black rhino, and Keeper Jackson. Whether it’s the wide range of vision she’s afforded by her tall stature, Twiggy is inherently nosey so her decision to join them will be very much based on wanting to know where they are headed on their morning walk Twiggy and Chamboi are just two of the many non elephant orphans currently in our care. Just like the rescued elephants, we provide them a home for as long as they need it, until they choose to reclaim their place in the wild. Learn more at sheldrickwildlifetrust.org
