Zeke, my son’s best friend, had been in intensive care for three days following a playground accident. One misstep during recess had led to a devastating fall—his skull fractured, internal bleeding, and a tangle of wires and machines now doing what his small body could not.
Eli had barely spoken since we got the call. His voice had become a quiet echo, always asking, “Is Zeke better yet?” again and again.
So when the doctors finally allowed a short visit, I agreed to take him—though part of me feared what he might see.
Eli didn’t say a word on the way in. He clutched something in his hand—a battered action figure Zeke had once given him. The toy had a missing arm and paint chipped from years of play.
When we reached the hospital room, Eli stepped closer to Zeke’s bed without hesitation. No tears, no fear. Just calm.

I DOZED OFF ON MY HUSBAND'S SHOULDER DURING THE FLIGHT, BUT WHEN I WOKE UP, I FOUND MYSELF RESTING ON A DIFFERENT MAN'S SHOULDER.
