Norman Borlaug - a name few have heard. Yet this is a man who lived to be 95, who is one of the few people to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal.

He is credited with saving one billion people all around the world from starvation. He researched and worked towards feeding people his entire life, until he died in 2009 of lymphoma.

The Maryland Network Against Domestic Violence is working towards keeping victims and their pets together and safe.

Most people forget that there are animals involved with many domestic violence situations as well. Many victims may be reluctant to seek help because they fear for their pets and fear no place will assist them with an animal.

The PETS campaign has compiled a list of agencies dedicated to helping these victims, human or otherwise, and works with them to provide safe care and housing.

The Pets Ease Trauma for Survivors (PETS) project is a new initiative launched by MNADV to support survivors of intimate partner violence and their pets in finding safe, stable housing together.

There is so much bad news surrounding us. So much hate, death, hopelessness, fear. I’m going to try to share more things that are a bit more uplifting. I know I need to be reminded of the goodness in humanity and I’m sure many others do too.

So I will start with an individual I’ve followed for years. She has dedicated her life to rescuing and caring for children accused of being witches, children abandoned by their villages. In the best case, the children, some only toddlers, are merely left to fend for themselves. In the worst cases they are subject to horrific, direct abuse.

Not only does she rescue these children and provide a home for them, but she feels very strongly that these children still need relationships in some way with their parents, and facilitates these relationships as best she can, when she can. She has a better heart and more of a drive to do what’s right than maybe anybody I know, including myself.

Everybody should know her name, know what she does, and support her work.
