Aside from Bruce Lee's Enter the Dragon (1973), martial arts films do not attain greater iconic status than this seminal Shaw Brothers studio production, expertly directed by Lau Kar-leung. Gordon Liu, Lau's preferred leading actor, portrays a determined student seeking to master the secretive techniques of the Shaolin temple. To perfect his skills and avenge his father's demise, Liu navigates a series of increasingly challenging training chambers. As a veteran stuntman and choreographer turned director, Lau's fight sequences are renowned for their innovation within the Shaw Brothers canon. The 36th Chamber is, foremost, a training film, featuring astonishingly inventive montages that comprise the film's first half, which truly must be witnessed to be appreciated.

Confronted with budgetary obstacles, John Carpenter opted to create a streamlined, urbanized western analogue, drawing on the narrative of Howard Hawks' Rio Bravo (1959) and situating it in contemporary Los Angeles, where the staff of a decommissioned police station, beset by street gangs, must collaborate with two condemned prisoners to weather the night, thereby illustrating the ongoing resonance of societal strife and affirming the moral importance of individual actions over institutional frameworks.

The Academy Awards themselves still use the term Actress yet some insist it's now Actor for both genders. What do you think it should be? I prefer Actress myself 🙂
