My mom found out she was pregnant with me while she was still in high school. The man who got her pregnant disappeared the very day she told himā€”no calls, no support, no presence at all.
She missed her prom. She swapped sparkly dresses for diapers and late-night shifts. She studied for her GED while I slept beside her.
So when my own prom came around this year, I told her:
ā€œMomā€¦ you missed your prom because of me. Come to mineā€”with me.ā€
She laughed at first. Then she cried so hard she had to sit down. My stepdad, Mike, was thrilled.
My stepsister, Brianna?
She almost choked on her Starbucks.
ā€œYouā€™re taking YOUR MOM to PROM? Thatā€™sā€¦ honestly pathetic.ā€
I didnā€™t respond.
Later, she went again.
ā€œSeriously, whatā€™s she even going to wear? One of her church dresses? Youā€™re going to totally EMBARRASS yourself.ā€
Still ignored her.
Prom day arrivedā€”and my mom looked incredible.
A soft blue gown. Vintage curls. A smile that lit up her entire face.
She whispered, ā€œWhat if people stare? What if I ruin your night?ā€
ā€œMom, you BUILT my life. You canā€™t ruin anything.ā€
We reached the school courtyard for photos.
Thatā€™s when Brianna strutted over in a glittery dress that probably cost more than my car. She pointed at my mom and said loudly:
ā€œWhy is SHE here? Is this prom or Bring-Your-Parent-to-School Day? How EMBARRASSING.ā€
Her friends laughed.
My momā€™s smile disappeared.
Anger surged through me.
But what Brianna didnā€™t expect was her dadā€”Mikeā€”stepping forward.
When he heard her words, he approached slowly, deliberately, and did something I will remember for the rest of my life.
