Why we think music is so good for young children.
We learn so much when we listen to music. Music inspires creative movement. It calms at rest time. It fosters listening skills. Through music children can learn about patterns. Through singing children learn rhymes and new vocabulary.
Young children love to sing, make music, and move to the beat. They feel competent when they learn a new song, powerful when they pound a drum or shake a tambourine, and proud when they invent a new dance. As children explore and enjoy music, they can develop skills in math, literacy, and social studies.
Young children explore music through play. They make discoveries through trial and error—"If I hit the tambourine lightly, it makes a soft sound. If I hit it hard, it makes a loud one.” They listen to the musical beat and dance along with it. They make up new words or add choruses to familiar songs.
Stage Left Musical Arts Center "ROCKIN TOTS" program offers a fun way to introduce your child to music and help develop thier listening, motor, vocal, memory, and social interaction skills.

Hello from your friends at the Staten Island School of Rock and Stage Left Musical Arts Center!
We are pleased to announce that our first 2015 Staten Island School of Rock Student Showcase has been set for Saturday March 14th, 2:00PM to 5:00PM (approximate end time).
The showcase will be held at Stage Left Musical Arts Center (adjacent to the Staten Island School of Rock).
We encourage all students to participate, so parents please feel free to discuss the showcase with your child’s teacher as soon as possible. We have many new students since our last event and are very excited to see them perform!
REGISTRATION
Each participating student is required to register in advance beginning today (Wednesday February 11th) by calling or visiting the Staten Island School of Rock. The registration fee is $30 per student which includes two tickets to the performance and a scheduled rehearsal (as needed). Additional tickets can be purchased (in advance only) at $10 each.
PARTICIPANTS
Teachers will begin discussing song choices with each participating student so they can be placed in a group to perform with at the show. In some cases the group will include other students, students and teachers, or teachers only, depending on what is needed for the performance.
REHEARSAL
Your registration fee includes at least one rehearsal prior to the show. Dates and times will be announced soon. Scheduled rehearsals cannot be made up, so please do your best to be available for this. In the meantime, teachers will be working with students individually to help prepare them for their performance.
DEADLINE
Please let us know by Saturday February 14th if you plan on participating in this exciting event.
As always, please feel free to stop by or give us a call with any questions you may have.
We look forward you seeing you all perform!

Ever wonder what some of the lyrics in classic rock songs mean? Here are the answers to some of those questions. Enjoy!
We've all heard these classic pop and rock hits a thousand times. But even if you know all the words, do you know what they were about?
Why MUSIC for your child?
Are you considering encouraging your child to play a musical instrument? No matter what the instrument, there are benefits that you may not be aware of and should be considering.
There is evidence that musicians have organizationally and functionally different brains than non-musicians. If you think about it, when you play an instrument you are using (and excercising) the parts of your brain that control motor skills, coodination, memory and cognitive skills. Studies suggest a 7 point increase in IQ for those who play an instrument as well as improved grade scores in school.
Learning an instrument helps with time management. It teaches patience, perserverance, and also helps sharpen concentration. It also provides a feeling of accomplishment, and with confidence comes better social skills. Music also opens a childs eyes culturally, is a great means of self expression and stress relief.

How playing an instrument benefits your brain.
Solving complex puzzles has been shown to give your brain a good workout, but did you know music does the same thing? Professor Anita Collins from the University of Canberra in Australia explains how playing an instrument benefits your mental health.
