Classic American Corn Dogs 🌭✨
These are the ultimate crunchy, sweet, and savory snacks—just like the ones you find at American state fairs!
Ingredients
For the Batter:
Cornmeal (Yellow): 1 cup
All-purpose Flour: 1 cup
Sugar: 2–4 tablespoons (depending on how sweet you like the coating)
Baking Powder: 2 teaspoons
Salt: ½ teaspoon
Black Pepper: ¼ teaspoon
Egg: 1 large
Milk: 1 cup (add slowly to reach the right consistency)
The Rest:
Hot Dogs/Sausages: 8–10 pieces
Cornstarch or Flour: For dusting the hot dogs
Oil: For deep frying
Wooden Skewers: 8–10 sticks
Cooking Method
Prep the Hot Dogs: Dry each hot dog thoroughly with a paper towel. This is the most important step! If they are damp, the batter will slide off. Insert a wooden skewer into each hot dog, leaving enough room at the bottom for a handle.
Mix the Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and pepper.
Add Wet Ingredients: Whisk in the egg and the milk. Stir until the batter is smooth. It should be very thick—thick enough to stay on the hot dog without dripping off immediately.
The Glass Trick: Pour the batter into a tall glass. This makes it much easier to coat the hot dogs evenly all the way to the top.
Coating: Lightly dust the hot dogs with a little bit of dry flour or cornstarch (shake off the excess). Dip one hot dog into the glass of batter, swirling it slightly to ensure it's fully covered.
Frying: Heat oil in a deep pan to about 180°C (350°F). Gently lower the coated hot dog into the oil. Fry for 2–3 minutes, turning occasionally, until they are a beautiful golden brown.
Serve: Drain on paper towels. Serve warm with plenty of yellow mustard and tomato ketchup!
💡 Pro-Tips for the Best Result:
Consistency is Key: If the batter is too thin, add a tablespoon of flour. If it’s too thick to dip, add a splash of milk.
Keep it Cold: If your kitchen is hot, keep the batter in the fridge until you are ready to dip. Cold batter on a dry hot dog creates the best crust!
