Report on Allegations Against Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung
Koung Accused of Sowing Division in Nimba
Vice President of the Republic of Liberia, Hon. Jeremiah Kpan Koung, has come under criticism for allegedly fueling division in his home county of Nimba. Prominent leaders, including Hon. Musa Hassan Bility, Political Leader of the Citizens Movement for Change (CMC), have accused the Vice President of harassment, intimidation, and fostering disrespect through local officials.
Hon. Bility described the Vice President’s leadership style as “miserable” and divisive. He alleged that Koung has instructed Nimba County Superintendent Kou Gono and other local officials to “disrespect leaders of the county” while personally targeting political opponents through harassment and intimidation.
According to Bility, rather than uniting Nimba, the Vice President has actively sought to divide it, discouraging dissent, humiliating former allies, and distancing himself from individuals who show independence.
Bility further noted that prominent Nimba leaders such as Madam Edith Gongloe-Weh and Senator Samuel Kogar, who have maintained independent voices, have been sidelined under the Vice President’s political maneuvering.
In a strongly worded statement titled “Lofa and Nimba: A Tale of Two Leaderships,” Bility contrasted the approaches of President Joseph Boakai and Vice President Koung. He argued that while President Boakai has consolidated unity in his native Lofa despite opposition, Koung has done the opposite in Nimba.
“In Lofa, the President has cemented his hold and unified his people. In Nimba, the Vice President has squandered trust, divided communities, and turned allies into enemies,” Bility stated.
Hon. Bility also alleged that the Vice President has gone beyond politics to target his business interests in an attempt to silence him. He maintained that such actions would not deter him, emphasizing that Nimba will continue to resist and oppose divisive politics.
These accusations have heightened concerns that Nimba, one of Liberia’s largest and most politically influential counties, is becoming increasingly fractured under the Vice President’s leadership.
As political tension intensifies, analysts warn that Vice President Koung risks alienating his base and weakening his influence in future national contests if the allegations of divisive leadership persist.
