SWANs, we know things have been exhausting since January 20th. This year's Independence Day might feel less celebratory than others.

Still, there's always a woman artist we can look to when we're in need of hope.

Deborah’s political enthusiasm in person is no less unapologetic than in her artwork. Last fall, I had the honor of interviewing Deborah for FF2’s series on ‘Artists for Democracy.’ Through eye-catching, provocative, poignant work, Deborah and other renowned American artists banded together to show the public what it stood to lose if Donald Trump took office.

What would America be like if we truly 'Support Women Artists Now'?

When we think of women in jazz, we typically think of singers like Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holliday, and Sarah Vaughn. But what about the other instruments in the band, like pianos, trumpets, and trombones? And what about the composers and the band leaders?

That’s what the current exhibit “Rhythm Is My Business: Women Who Shaped Jazz” at the New York Public Library’s Library for the Performing Arts explores in photographs, short videos, audio pieces, and other music paraphernalia: https://ff2media.com/blog/2025/05/15/rhythm-is-my-business-the-women-who-shaped-jazz/

At a time when women’s voices were too often muted or sidelined, Eleanor wrote boldly. She turned dreams into weapons, whimsy into protest, and verse into revolution. Whether in the apple orchard or the political column, her message was always the same: magic is real—and so is justice: https://ff2media.com/blog/2025/06/05/eleanor-farjeon-morning-has-broken/

Rachel Feldman, director and co-writer of Lilly, began her day with big news. A longtime supporter of activist Lilly Ledbetter, Hillary Clinton had just tweeted about the movie’s release.

“Sometimes, just one courageous person can start the wheels of change turning,” she wrote. “Lilly Ledbetter proved that, and Lilly, based on her fight for equal pay, is out today. I loved it.”

Annie Ernaux is a French author who writes fiction and memoir, and sometimes a little of both at once.

She is known for her autobiographical writing, which is intimate and personal while expertly contextualizing her life within a broader history and society; her written experiences are not just hers, but a part of a larger collective social consciousness. Her writing is both politically important and masterfully visceral and rich.

On October 6th, it was announced that she would be awarded the 2022 Nobel Prize in Literature “for the courage and clinical acuity with which she uncovers the roots, estrangements and collective restraints of personal memory”, as stated in the press release. Ghost (1990)

Though in charge of all the costumes for 1990’s Ghost, the pieces Ruth made for Whoopi Goldberg are undoubtedly her crowning achievement.

Speaking particularly about Oda Mae’s iconic pink and black suit, Ruth explained, “I wanted something the character would think was the best thing to wear to a bank. I think we went over the top with that. I designed the suit and the Paramount costume department made it. It really made her stand out from her surroundings.” Read more here: https://ff2media.com/blog/2025/03/28/ruth-morley-film-costume-designer/

Chita was complex, vibrant, astonishingly multi-talented, and perpetually positive. She did it all.

She had it all, and we’re thrilled to honor her as our American Icon for 2025!

So, just who is Amber Ruffin, whose presumed “roast” of Donald Trump was deemed too extreme by the WHCA?

With so many achievements – not to mention experience as host of the Writers Guild Awards ceremony in 2018 – Amber seemed like a perfect pick fit for this year’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner. That is, until last month, when she referred to the Trump administration as “murderers” online.

What does all of this mean for the future of journalism in America? Read here: https://ff2media.com/blog/2025/05/02/silenced-by-fellow-journalists-amber-ruffin-is-disappeared-from-whcd/

The art vs the artist

Originally from Johannesburg (South Africa), Justine has been a vital figure on the New York art scene for decades.

Presented on raised pedestals, Justine’s ‘Venuses’ bare all to the viewer’s eyes. The blue torsos — rendered in a shockingly vibrant lapis — drip with feminine joy… and burden.

Though ‘Myth’ may be Justine’s first show, there is no doubt that it will not be her last. Her prowess is too great, and her message too necessary. Read our review of her exhibit here: https://ff2media.com/blog/2025/03/27/justine-koons-myth/

have you seen Coralie Fargeat's debut feature 'Revenge'?

Revenge, written and directed by French filmmaker Coralie Fargeat, is a visceral and subversive take on the revenge genre that turns traditional cinematic tropes on their head. Reimagining male violence from a feminist perspective, Coralie’s 2017 debut film is a powerful commentary on r**e culture—between individuals, on screen, and in Hollywood.

A powerful deconstruction of sexual violence in cinema, Revenge reveals a chilling metaphor for Hollywood’s systemic abuse: https://ff2media.com/blog/2025/03/29/coralie-fargeats-revenge/
