The Chรขteau de Chambord is one of the most iconic and grand castles in the Loire Valley of France, renowned for its distinctive French Renaissance architecture blending medieval and classical elements. Built in the 16th century by King Francis I, it was originally intended as a hunting lodge but evolved into a symbol of royal power and extravagance. Its striking features include a vast double-helix staircaseโ€”possibly inspired by Leonardo da Vinciโ€”and an elaborate roofline with towers, chimneys, and spires. Surrounded by a vast forested park, Chambord is both a masterpiece of design and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The largest totally preserved fortress in Europe that has never been conquered - Hohensalzburg castle in Austria. It is also the first hilltop castle in the world that got a funicular back in 1500. The castle was built in the 11th century, later the massive Romanesque fortress evolved into a gothic castle that took on renaissance traits with the passage of time. Basically the looks of the castle date back to the 16th century. 200 years later it possessed 415 mortars, 590 cannons as well as had some 100 sets of fill equestrian armor and over 1000 breast plates, helmet barbs and spears. And it surrendered to Napoleon without a fight.

Chรขteau de Verteuil, dating back to the 11th century, has been linked to the La Rochefoucauld family. During the Hundred Years' War, it changed hands multiple times between the French and English until Charles VII reclaimed it. The current chรขteau, with its five conical towers and triangular layout, began construction in the mid-15th century and was declared a Historical Monument in 1966. Distinguished visitors include King Francis I and King Louis XIII. While the chรขteau is not open to the public, guided tours of the grounds and kitchen are available daily at 3 pm (โ‚ฌ6 each in 2017). Tickets can be purchased at La Rรฉgie in the main street. The chรขteau hosts a gardening event on the first weekend in May and a fireworks display during the Assumption fรชte in August.

Fenis Castle in Aosta Valley, Italy was built in the medieval times - around the 12-13th century. Since the Middle Ages till the 18th century the castle belonged to the Challant family. when it was sold it lost its prestigious status of the family seat. Just imagine the ground floor was turned into stables and a barn! The castle is famous for its towers - big and small, round and square - , walls and intricate pentagonal layout. The photo clearly shows several lines of defenses that protect the castle.
