💜 FIBROMYALGIA: THIS IS WHAT YOU DON'T SEE
Three days ago, I started this journey by talking about invisible illnesses and the words that so many of us have heard:
“But you don't look sick.”
Now I want to start taking you inside my own reality.
One of the conditions I live with is fibromyalgia.
Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition associated with widespread pain, fatigue, sleep problems, cognitive difficulties known as “fibro fog,” and increased sensitivity to pain. Symptoms can vary from person to person and can change over time.
For me, fibromyalgia isn't just having a little body ache or being tired.
It's living with pain that can move throughout my body.
It's waking up already exhausted.
It's stiffness, tenderness and sensitivity that can make things other people consider simple feel completely different for me.
It's the brain fog that can make it difficult to concentrate or remember things.
It's having a body that doesn't always cooperate with the plans I had for the day.
And sometimes, I look completely fine while all of this is happening inside me.
That's why I want to talk about the Spoon Theory.
The spoon method is a metaphor many people with chronic illness use to explain limited energy. Imagine starting your day with a certain number of spoons. Everything you do costs energy—getting dressed, showering, cooking, working, going somewhere, taking care of responsibilities.
Once those spoons are gone, they're gone.
And tomorrow isn't guaranteed to come with the same number.
That's something I wish more people understood about chronic illness.
A good day doesn't mean I'm cured.
It means I had a better day.
And if you see me laughing, dressed up, taking pictures, going somewhere or enjoying myself, that doesn't mean I don't have pain.
It means you happened to see me during a moment when I was able to show up.
I'm sharing this series because I don't want people to only see the outside.
I want you to understand the woman behind the smile.
And this isn't going to stop with my story.
I'm also going to be introducing other women who are willing to share their medical journeys, so we can learn about different illnesses, different symptoms and different realities.
This is about more than awareness.
It's about believing people.
It's about listening.
It's about compassion.
It's about education.
Because sometimes the person who looks the healthiest in the room is fighting the hardest battle.
So when someone tells you they're hurting, exhausted, struggling or simply can't do something today...
Believe them.
You don't have to see someone's illness to acknowledge that it's real.
I'm a Fibromyalgia Warrior.
And this is only one part of my story.
Follow along as I continue sharing the conditions I live with and introducing other women who are ready to use their stories to help spread awareness.
Real women.
Real conditions.
Real stories.
Real life.
