Damn, another year around the the sun! I’m insanely thankful for the people and family in my circle. I’ve grown a ton in the past year, shifting my focus to learning and listening, rather than constantly doing. We have so much room for growth to allow all people to experience equality in this life, and I’m going to continue doing what I can to promote this in year 29. Thanks everyone for the kind wishes! 📸:@grantgulla

This is impossible to ignore. So white people, I challenge you to say this with me. If you’ve said it before, say it again. “I benefit from white privilege. I do not have to be complicit. I can demand the change that is necessary for all humans to be represented and treated equally.” Direct racism is a result of systemic racism. We need to start by tackling it above, and work our way down. There is hope that we can treat this terrible disease that lives in every single white person (in varying degrees), but progress will not be made until it is self-diagnosed. This may be uncomfortable, but it is necessary.

I’ve been doing more research and supporting organizations that have put in the ground work by following, donating and signing petitions. I will link these below and invite everyone who sees this post to tag other organizations and people who are working towards a world without policing, prisons, and prosecutions in their current state.

Regretfully, I normally keep the heavy topics I’m about to disclose in conversations with friends and family. But this is the problem, and I am publicly holding myself accountable while realizing that I have been complicit. I have not done enough and we (White people) should not remain silent. On social media I’ve been silent in response to the numerous examples of why our current system needs to be dismantled and rebuilt from the ground up. I’m taking this opportunity to define my stance and share what I’ve learned by refraining from being defensive, and identifying how I have a privilege solely based on the color of my skin. In the same way that Black people are systemically and directly oppressed because of the color of theirs. The only way to change this is to demand it from the people in power, and history has shown us that this is not always done peacefully. We (White people) need to act and challenge ourselves to figure out how we can do more.

Here are the facts. Our “justice system” has committed constant acts of betrayal against humanity. These acts have targeted Black people, often resulting in lives that do not need to be lost. This of course means death, but also includes wrongful convictions and prosecutions. Not to mention the constant fear that every Black person experiences for just living. It is a tragic, direct repercussion of racism first and foremost, but is more specifically the result of a system that was built to oppress Black people. It has been going on for centuries, and was built on the foundation of racism and slavery. There is NO reforming a system that is acting EXACTLY as intended. We need to build towards a better future that represents all of us equally. We (White people) need to stop deflecting with statements such as “All Lives Matter” and “Not all cops are bad”. These prolong the issues. It is our (white people’s) responsibility to hold each other accountable and call it out as it is.

So far, it feels like I’ve been spending the new year dedicating myself to making use of every single nook and cranny in @jasmineburnsidestyles and I’s apartment. We made some much needed updates in the studio and opened up the space to make more sense for a collaborative workflow. Doing the groundwork for a productive 2020!

The Intellectual Producer — Jamie McArdle

My second blog post is live. I’m in the process of setting the tone and writing style as this is new for me, but the goal is to address all of the questions I’ve been getting in one place. I’m starting by addressing some common areas that can be troubling for those that are starting to develop your business.

This one is titled “Determine Your Worth Before Pricing Your Work”. I’m starting out strong and touching base on some controversial areas within different types of pricing structures for freelancers. PLEASE comment on the blog or this post if you have a different view than I do on the pricing structures I go over, the whole point is to initiate conversation that enables us both to learn. I’m essentially documenting my experiences as I grow my business, and I know it will be beneficial for many of you.

“The Intellectual Producer” is my way of attempting to create some kind of guideline for success as a music producer, as we all know there is simply no direct path. I’m nowhere near where I want to be, but l’ll be stating my milestones along the way. https://www.jamiemcardlemusic.com/theintellectualproducer/

This should be a concept that is already on your mind, or already defined for your current state. No matter where you are in your career, this is something that consistently has to be revisited.

The Intellectual Producer — Jamie McArdle

My blog is now live! It is titled “The Intellectual Producer”, respectively. Instagram and Facebook have been great platforms to engage with new people and share our unique experiences, but I want to create a more intimate experience with those of you who are as serious about their career in music as I am. Think of it as an extension from social media. Similar to a lot of you who I’ve been in contact with, I am in the beginning stages of working for myself in music. This comes with many hurdles to climb, and the pure intention of this blog is to learn from each other’s mistakes and milestones.

In my first post, I start to define the ideal reader. The ones who will benefit from the content I am putting out. I then start to go over what separates an “intellectual” producer from a “lazy” one. I encourage any of you reading this to check it out and determine if you will benefit from “The Intellectual Producer” blog segment and join the community.

Consider this an introductory post, as I’ll normally be posting every Monday to start our work weeks. Let’s grow together!

Recording music is a unique process. It is the art of capturing a specific moment in time in the form of sound. Whether you are an artist or a listener, it can bring you back to a specific point in time. Such as taking a photo might have a similar effect, the art of transferring your mind into sound can’t be compared to anything else. I’ve found that surrounding yourself with like minded artists of all kinds during this process is the key to bringing out ideas you didn’t even know you possessed. Thanks @jasmineburnsidestyles for inspiring me all the time!

This #intellectualproducer segment is inspired by none other than the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin.

2018 is the year I’m focusing on my authentic self. In the past I’ve always found myself dabbling in multiple aspects of what makes me happy, achieving minimal success in each one. As we get older and learn more about our strengths and weaknesses, it becomes apparent that each creative has a lane to thrive in. The most important thing I’ve done to advance my career is simply be my authentic self, especially when writing music. Let’s help each other be our best selves. DM me if you agree!

“I try to make music with emotion, integrity and authenticity. You can feel when something’s authentic, and you can feel when it’s not. You know when someone’s trying to make a club record, or trying to make the girl record, or trying to make the thug record. It’s none of that, it’s just my emotions.” - Jay Z #theintellectualproducer

Hey everyone! I’m starting a new segment through my social media accounts in an attempt to create more engagement with my fellow creatives. It’s titled #theintellectualproducer, and the idea is to share quotes that have inspired growth within my music career. Interpret this segment as you will and hopefully find some inspiration! I’ll be sharing some songwriting and production tips along the way as well.
. . .
Every once in a while I step outside the rush of adult life and think about why I’ve made the sacrifices I have in order to continue pursuing what I love. Most of the time it doesn’t require thought, because I can’t see my life without music. The truth is, pursuing a career that has no exact path to “success”, includes many failures along the way. But at the end of the day, I’m simply following my instinct.

“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.” - Pablo Picasso #theintellectualproducer
