Those of you who have visited me at the Flatiron Building know my 1950s red pool chair. It has been with me since Holt’s offices were on 115 West 18th Street. I bought it years ago at the Chelsea Flea Market. It’s not able to move to the new space downtown so I’m planning to take it home where it can retire happily on our porch. Photo by Jessica Anderson who kept me laughing today despite the sad goodbye to the one-of-a-kind Flatiron.

After Daniel's experiences, readers will want to move there too."―Kirkus, starred review

"Holt applies her talent for writing quiet, heartfelt stories to this study of Daniel, a lonely boy struggling with his parents’ recent divorce. . .Quirky neighborhood characters occupy the idyllic town, and this serene backdrop gives Daniel and Tilda much-needed opportunities for uninterrupted personal reflection and positive steps forward."―Booklist

"Touches of the fantastic augment accessible, straightforward prose, which permeates the neighborhood personalities’ lives and motivations, lending this novel a gently bustling yet intimate atmosphere." ―Publishers Weekly

"Holt’s whimsical narrative moves between Daniel’s struggles in his new life, Tilda’s reflections on her old one, and the critters and community that surround them both. . . A smart, hopeful perspective of life on any lane."―The Bulletin

A Tribute to Anne Rockwell

When I was a junior in high school I transferred to a new school in a town where I didn’t know anyone. I remember, on the very first day of school in English class, that I was sitting behind Anne Rockwell’s son. How did I know this? The teacher took attendance and when he came to Oliver Rockwell, I distinctly recall he paused and asked if Oliver was the son of the renowned children’s book collaborators Anne and Harlow Rockwell. The whole class broke out in whispers while the teacher continued to ask Oliver questions about his esteemed parents. I quickly realized then that this was a family of importance and that their legacy was a part of the community I was joining. It was my first introduction to the Rockwell family but it wouldn’t be my last.

Fast forward about eight years later when I entered the children’s book industry as an editorial assistant. Anne was a well-established name in the business with books being published by multiple houses. Although she published books for various ages, she was especially celebrated for her books that targeted the preschool market. It wasn’t until I became a parent a number of years later that I began to realize just how brilliant Anne was at what she did. When my two year old son became obsessed with tools, I proceeded to take out every picture book in the library on the subject. That's when I discovered My Toolbox which Anne created with Harlow -- it was a near perfect book in words and pictures. From that book we took out -- over and over -- every single book Anne, Anne and Harlow, and Anne and her daughter Lizzy had created together. There were other books my son loved, but none as much as those Anne published alone or with her family. The simplicity in the careful word choice, the child-like questioning and observation about every day things, the thoughtful cadence of the language and, of course, the bold, expressive illustrations all came together with such harmony and grace.

I became so taken with Anne's artfulness as a book creator that I decided to reach out to her in the hope that we could work on new projects together for publication. To my good fortune, Anne said yes. During the years we worked together we published four books: Here Comes the Night, My Preschool, a reissue of The Supermarket, a book Anne initially created with Harlow and that she re-illustrated with the help of her granddaughter Julianna Brion, and The Hardware Store which Melissa Iwai beautifully illustrated when it became too difficult for Anne to paint. Anne was incredibly thoughtful about how she approached her subject and could be stubborn if she didn’t share your way of thinking. But her stubbornness was always in defense and respect of her reader -- how would a child interpret the experience reflected in the story? How would a child respond to the language? How would a child relate to the illustrations? Above all, it was about reaching her child reader. I learned a lot from Anne about creating books for very young children during the time I was her editor and publisher and am grateful for that experience. There are few children's book creators who have had careers that span five decades -- this is testament to the lasting power of Anne's books as well as her relevance in an industry that can often be fickle. She will be sorely missed, but she has left a trunk full of thought provoking books for new generations of young minds to discover and read over and over and over.
