The Drama Desk

The Drama Desk The only major New York theater honors for which productions on Broadway, Off-Broadway, Off-Off-Broadway compete against each other in the same category.

Drama Desk Awards, which are given annually in a number of categories, are the only major New York theater honors for which productions on Broadway, Off-Broadway and Off-Off Broadway compete against each other in the same category. Formed in 1949 by a group of New York theater critics, editors, reporters, and publishers, the organization was created to educate the community on vital issues concerning the theater. In 1955, Drama Desk became the first major organization to honor Outstanding Achievement Off-Broadway, with their Vernon Rice Awards, named for the late New York Post critic who had pioneered Off-Broadway coverage in the New York press. In 1974, as Off and Off-Off Broadway grew in importance, Drama Desk began what has become its distinct tradition - evaluating all three venues by the same criteria. In 1974 Drama Desk also became incorporated as a not-for-profit organization. In keeping with its original mission, the organization sponsors guest panel luncheons with theater professionals. Panels address topics of current interest - covering the season on Broadway, Off Broadway and Off-Off Broadway, with the aim of prompting informative and stimulating discussion. In 2012 Theatremania.com presented the 57th Annual Drama Desk Awards. All of Drama Desk officers and Nominating Committee members perform their various services for the organization on a voluntary basis. The Nominating Committee generally meets twice a month to discuss the many eligible shows they are responsible for seeing. They then choose the productions for nomination on which the entire membership will vote. What sets the organization apart is that the awards are voted on by media people only without any vested interests in the results.

Mission: Formed in 1949 by a group of New York theater critics, editors, reporters, and publishers, the organization was created to educate the community on vital issues concerning the theater.

Drama Desk – Celebrating Excellence in ALL New York Theatre Since 1955

The Drama Desk Board is very proud of our organization’s panel, “Expanding the Discourse: Is the Landscape of Theater Changing for Artists with Disabilities?,” which took place at Ripley-Grier Studios on Nov. 12, 2018. For those of you who were unable to attend: the event was moderated by Katy Sullivan (Paralympic track and fielder and star of Cost of Living, the 2018 Pulitzer Prize play, both at MTC and in LA) and featured an impressive group of artists:

Christine Bruno (actor, writer, director, and disability advocate),
Shannon DeVido (The Healing at Theater Breaking Through Barriers and Teenage Dick at the Public),
Stephanie Gould (0range is the New Black, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and Bernie & Mikey’s Trip to the Moon at 59E59),
John Christopher Jones (actor, playwright, and translator, who was honored with an Obie for his 2011 translation of The Cherry Orchard),
Gregg Mozgala (Cost of Living at MTC, Teenage Dick, and founder of The Apothetae, a theater company dedicated to the production of works that explore and illuminate the “disabled experience”),
Jamie Sanders (actor and writer who recently made his professional debut in Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime at Kansas City Rep), and
Ali Stroker (Glee, Spring Awakening on Broadway, Oklahoma! at St. Ann’s Warehouse).

This program, which was free (and open to non-members after a holdback for Drama Desk members to make reservations), was extremely well-attended. We would have been “standing room only” had all those who made reservations actually been present. The discussion was lively and productive, with numerous questions and responses from the floor. Attendees, both panelists and audience members, lingered afterwards to carry on with the discussion until we had to relinquish the room. (You will find an account of the event by Patrick Christiano, along with Barry Gordin’s photographs and Jose Solis's Video of the participants, on the Drama Desk web site, www.dramadesk.org.)
