Interventions

Interventions Interventions is the online journal of the Modern Art: Critical and Curatorial Studies (MODA) program at Columbia University.

Interventions is a curatorial platform featuring essays, interviews, web-based art projects, and experimental investigations of the implicit cross-sections between these practices. The journal was launched in 2011 in conjunction with Columbia University’s graduate program in Modern Art: Critical & Curatorial Studies (MODA) by Ceren Erdem, Jaime Schwartz, and Lisa Hayes Williams. Interventions is currently edited by Béatrice Grenier, Anna Linehan, and Amber Moyles.

Mission: Flexible in format, the project aims to cultivate dialogue amongst a diverse body of participants including curators, artists, and art and architectural historians in order to establish a common space and archive of exchange.

Ding an sich: Net.art Conservation and the “Thingness of the Thing” — Magazine — Walker Art Center

Check out this article by Richard Rinehart for the Walker Art Center, resonating with the themes of our current issue, "Object Lesson." Rinehart discusses the conservation Piotr Szyhalski's 'Ding an sich' (1997), a work of Net.art now relaunched as an iPad app.

When Steve Dietz and the Walker Art Center asked me to write about the re-launch of the 1997 web-based artwork Ding an sich, one of the reasons humorously offered for my selection was that I was alive at the time of the original commission. I had a chuckle, but it seems entirely appropriate to measu…

Documentary Aesthetics: New Questions of Media and Truth

We are seeking submissions for our first printed issue, which will focus on documentary aesthetics in film and photography, as well as the problems related to the exhibition of works of art as documentation. We encourage submissions— in the form of artist projects or essays— that approach this topic across artistic, critical, and curatorial frameworks.

CALL FOR CONTENT, Fall 2014
Volume 4, Issue 1 - Object Lesson: Conservation and Contemporary Art

Interventions is seeking content for its next issue, foregrounding the material life and death of works of art. Taking the discipline of art conservation as a point of departure, “Object Lesson” addresses themes of preservation and decay, permanence and ephemerality, physical integrity and volatility, as well as intersections between conservation and the likewise object-based practices of artists, curators, and historians of modern and contemporary art.
