After discovering she was underpaid while on leave, Tara Jones, an employee at an Amazon warehouse in Oklahoma, reached out to the company's boss directly. 😬

In 2020, she realized that $90 was missing from the $540 she should have received during her time off.

The new mother expressed her distress in a message to the billionaire, writing: “I’m behind on bills, all because the pay team messed up.

“I’m crying as I write this email.”

Unbeknownst to her, this action would have repercussions for other employees at the company who were also on leave. ✍️

An investigation by The New York Times later revealed that the underpayment issue was widespread; workers on leave across 179 Amazon warehouses had been affected for a period of at least a year and a half.

In response, Amazon's CEO Andy Jassy—who succeeded Bezos in July 2021—has committed to making Amazon 'Earth’s best employer'. The tech giant released a statement addressing the situation.

A spokesperson stated: “We’re disappointed when any of our employees experience an issue with their leave.

“Thanks to controls implemented over the past 18 months, fewer than 1% of our employees now encounter problems while on paid leave.

“The unprecedented challenge of the Covid pandemic did strain our systems, and we are continuously working to invest and innovate to improve.” 👀
