“Given the negative forces—political, economic, and segregationist—that have pushed people to the margins of the ideal city in the form of large housing ‘projects’ and refugee camps, what emotions, concerns, or psychoses might inform or limit an architect? More important, in what ways do marginalized folks become architects by refusing to accept the limits of normative social space or, by extension, the modernist ethos? How might the norm be undermined, subverted? How might abjection be the starting point for a new vision of the future?”

Hello Readers,

please join us on Thursday, May 7, at 6 p.m. for a Kitchen Broadcast by Jeanine Oleson, timed with the release of her new book Conduct Matters, published by Dancing Foxes. Through discussion and performance, Oleson and her ongoing collaborators Beth Griffith, Lisa Reynolds, and Diwa Tamrong will use the space of the screen to test our notions of embodiment and alienation.

Watch Conduct Matters live on The Kitchen’s website or on their Twitch page. Kitchen Broadcast is a new livestream performance series that invites artists to connect from their homes to yours, through any form they see fit.

The book gathers the texts, scores, and transcripts of Oleson’s hopefully dystopic project, which was originally shown at the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, in 2017. The publication presents the exhibited works as manifestations of the artist’s ongoing interest in the lapses of communication and language through either abstraction or actual bodily distance. Wrestling with a set of ethical concerns around materials we may take for granted but that breach distances through wires and networks—primarily copper—Conduct Matters offers a sharply absurdist response to the uses and production of copper in 21st-century capitalism.

EARTH DAY, Wednesday, April 22, 7 p.m. EST: Writer and artist Julia Christensen will host a virtual panel discussion on her artist project and forthcoming book, Upgrade Available. The multimedia presentation will center on how relentless “upgrade culture”—the perceived notion that one needs to constantly upgrade our electronics to remain relevant—fundamentally impacts our experience of time. Panelists include Aria Dean, editor and curator at Rhizome and Jessica Gambling, LACMA archivist.

Christensen’s project covers over 10 years of research, from her early investigation of the international e-waste industry to institutional archives to, most recently, her collaboration with scientists at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Her book covers this long and winding exploration in the form of a personal narrative with related interdisciplinary artwork and conversations with experts from different fields.

Part of LACMA’s virtual Earth Day festivities, this event emphasizes the environmental focus of Christensen’s work, as well as the planetary science that her collaborators from JPL brought into her practice. Upgrade Available—the book, the project, and this online event—questions how our actions impact the future of our planet. As Jenny Odell (author of How to Do Nothing: Resisting the Attention Economy) says in praise for the book, “Christensen’s writing and conversations illustrate the complex, fascinating, and often fraught relationship of technology to different time scales, where outdated artifacts both contain our personal memories and litter outer space. Her attitude toward time is as humane as it is useful, allowing us to imagine planning for something other than our own obsolescence.”

Upgrade Available: Live and Illustrated, free with RSVP at https://www.lacma.org/event/upgrade-available-live-and-illustrated-julia-christensen-conversation-aria-dean-and-jessica

EAI Benefit Art Auction

Dear Friends,

If you are in or around NYC this Thursday, April 19, we hope you will consider supporting EAI by attending their Benefit Party and first ever Benefit Art Auction at PPOW Gallery. EAI has a long and rich history of supporting media arts and providing a platform for the production, exhibition, distribution, and preservation of video art and, more recently, digital art. One of the first non-profits in the US to support video art as an art form, EAI remains an essential and invaluable site for experimentation and play.

The event will be a celebration of EAI and the incredible roster of artists who have participated in the organization over its more than 45 years, with a cocktail reception, screening of works by Merce Cunningham and Jacolby Satterwhite, and silent auction. The auction includes works by Charles Atlas, Dara Birnbaum, Joan Jonas, Barbara Hammer, Kalup Linzy, Pope.L, and Carolee Schneeman, among many others, and went live on Artsy.net on April 5.

You can purchase tickets to the event here: http://eai-benefit.eventbrite.com. Or you can bid on artworks here: https://www.artsy.net/auction/eai-benefit-auction-2018.

We hope you will join us in celebrating EAI and their commitment to thoughtful, rigorous, and experimental programming!
