Katerina Kyselica's artist's book Field Notes (2018). Photograph: Katerina Kyselica.

Katerina chose a playful format for her artist's book Field Notes, in which 13 drawings (executed on almost-square papers - a Czech handmade paper Losiny) serve as pages, each offering the reader/viewer a different design, all connected with text typewritten in blank spaces. Both the design of each page and the text - the poem - play on a rhythm that takes the reader through the book.

The text reads:

the flow / the run / the stream
to break / a noise / it seems / you fool / to make
the flow / to slow / the run / a voice
the cry / to tear / apart / the noise
the rush / to break / away

flip the coin

It is up to the reader, however, to form her or his own poem and design, sequencing each page as they fit.

Katerina created two versions in 2018, the shorter one, encased in a black portfolio, was commissioned as an award by the Vaclav Havel Library Foundation, for the winner of the 2018 Disturbing the Peace Award to a Courageous Writer at Risk.

Two Czech #women artists - Jitka and Kveta Valova - twin sisters, were given posthumous titles of “Dames of Czech Culture” for their art, civic courage. #womenshistorymonth #march #art

Twin sisters Jitka and Květa Válová, named “Dames of Czech Culture” in memorandum this week, were once described by a Communist zealot as an “ulcer on the red face of Kladno”, the industrial Bohemian city of their birth. They rejected the dominant Socialist Realism aesthetic of the 1950s,...

#artistbook Books On Books's post about Katerina Kyselica's new artist's book for The Václav Havel Library Foundation. "The drawings could represent anything: a field of grain, a tower block with windows, or marks on a prison wall to count the days. The loose format of the book allows readers to arrange the drawings or compose the text in an order as they see fit, although a colophon presents the full poem in its intended order."
