Wood frogs have one of the most incredible survival strategies in the animal kingdom. 🐸❄️
During winter, these frogs bury themselves under leaves and enter a state of deep dormancy that can last for several months. In extremely cold northern climates, they may remain inactive for up to eight months.
Their bodies undergo an extraordinary transformation. A large portion of their body water can freeze, while their heartbeat and breathing stop. In some cases, as much as 65–70% of their body water may become frozen. 🧊
Because they remain inactive for so long, wood frogs produce very little urine and retain large amounts of urea, a waste product, in their bodies.
But the urea serves an important purpose. Along with other natural compounds, it helps protect their cells and tissues from damage caused by freezing. It essentially works as part of the frog’s natural cold-protection system. 🧬
The remarkable part is that the frog can remain in this frozen state without permanent damage. Its heart stops, breathing stops, and many normal bodily processes shut down.
Then, when temperatures rise and spring arrives, the frog slowly thaws. Its heart begins beating again, breathing resumes, and its organs return to normal function. 🌱☀️
It’s almost as if nature gives the wood frog a temporary “pause button” during winter. 🐸❄️
