🕰️ Decades in the Making: U.S. Immigration Enforcement

Immigration lawyer and professor Ragini Shah breaks down how U.S. immigration enforcement powers — including racial profiling — have deep roots in laws and Supreme Court decisions dating back to the 1970s and 80s.

⚖️ While each administration chooses its approach, the legal structure enabling ICE to stop, question, and detain has existed for decades. What’s changed is how aggressively that power is used — often harming families, workers, and even U.S. citizens.

💬 Shah explains that immigration agents have long acted as though racial profiling was permissible — but today, they’re pushing those boundaries further than ever.

📚 Movement Dictionary — Immigrant

We hear the word “immigrant” all the time — but what does it really mean?

In this clip, Professor Ragini Shah, Clinical Professor of Law and founding director of the Immigrant Justice Clinic at Suffolk Law, reminds us that “immigrant” isn’t a fixed identity. It’s a legal status that can change — from entering on a visa, to becoming unauthorized, to adjusting through marriage or asylum.

The language we use shapes how we see people — and how policy treats them.

✳️ Immigrant (n.)
A person who is not a U.S. citizen and whose legal status can change over time.
