Chance Magazine

Chance Magazine Chance is an art magazine that looks at the world through the lens of theater and design.

Chance is a photography magazine that looks at the world through the lens of theater and design. We commission an original photo shoot of every show we cover and believe that superior visual documentation will transform the way we see and think about the theater and the people who design for it. Chance is about great photography and deep, honest and penetrating conversations. We've organized the magazine into 10 areas. Interview - An extended conversation with a remarkable creator and thinker in world theater accompanied by specially commissioned images illustrating the design in question. Document - A clean, noise-free look at a handful of designs with illuminating commentary and conversations about the path to creation and revision. Focus - An in-depth, high resolution still-life photo essay of a single design. featuring an innovative photographic process. Reality - A backstage or offstage shoot of people working in theater. Portfolio - A comprehensive look at the work of a designer over a span of productions. Performance - Our innovative photographic eye trained on live performance. Play - Completely unique.; Play asks: what if we use a new play to inspire an original, narrative driven photo-shoot . Play is unlike anything you have ever seen before in theater photography. Studio - A look at the sketches, models and preparatory/investigative documents of a designer, often from a previous generation. Book - Photographic innovator Stephen Joseph takes us into the studios of today's leading designers in stunning 360 degree panoramas where we ask them to talk about the books that have had the most persistent and decisive affect on their point of view. In short, Chance is a calm and balanced place to look at design, to consider the work and enjoy grounded, serious engagement about the American theater. So, we say hello to our friends in fashion, and architecture, and to designers everywhere. We say hello to theaters across America, Europe and Asia. We say hello to writers, journalists, and thinkers about the arts and literature. Welcome to Chance.

An extraordinary achievement to be acknowledged: we notice, we celebrate, we record the work of all the entire design and production teams. Good news. -- Martha Wade Steketee.

The Power of Collective Action! Designer credits are back in the NY Times, in the print and mobile versions. They called the Union late afternoon on Tuesday to let us know this was happening and they were as good as their word. Reviews in this morning's edition contain full credits including all Designers. Thank you and congratulations to the 850 members who signed the USA 829 letter, to our colleagues the 80 playwrights who signed that letter, IATSE president Matt Loeb who sent a letter and to everyone who took action to help make this happen! I suggest that our actions of complaint be followed by actions thanking the Times for hearing us and responding. Cecilia Friederichs - National Business Agent

Incorporating Media Design into Live Performance: Media Design and Dramaturgy: Creating Meaning

Daniel Fine reflects on dramaturgy + design + multiple disciplines + considering the future of media-augmented live performance in HowlRound. "Yet it seems that the basics of dramaturgy are often eschewed when it comes to the use of digital media in live performance. A key dramaturgical question that I find is often overlooked is, 'What story are we trying to tell and how will the inclusion of media help us tell that story effectively?'"

In the second installment of his media design series, Daniel Fine discusses the important connection between media design and dramaturgy in effective storytelling onstage.

Designers will reveal their own dramaturgical impulses and talk about stepping into the role of being a generative artist themselves. Whether they are there from the beginning or join towards the end, we reveal the dramaturgical minds sitting behind the tech table. When they aren’t starting magazines or creating theater for children and adults who enjoy getting in touch with their inner child.

The Collaborator Party

A convening of theater sound designers and allies was held Sunday June 7, 2015 as a Tony viewing party, celebration and communal pondering: what if there were a play and no sound came? On June 11, 2014, the Tony Awards announced the elimination of awards for Best Sound Design of a Play and Best Sound Design of a Musical. Sound designers decided to turn their frustration into action as THE COLLABORATOR PARTY. "If the Tony Awards weren't able to celebrate the achievements by sound designers on Broadway this year, then it's up to sound designers to celebrate themselves. It's time for a party."

Sound designer Victoria (Toy) Deiorio told Chance this morning that the party was wildly successful. "What we found was that the energy of all of us being in the room together was exhilarating. Old friends that hadn't seen each other in years mixed with Facebook friends finally being face to face, and new friendships based on the small world of who knew who blossomed all in one evening. It was not about The Tony, it was not about advocacy, it was about a group of people that never get to be in a room together celebrating collaboration. Lindsay [Jones] and John [Gromada] did such a fantastic job, all that hard work paid off."

And the legacy of this energy extends beyond party planning, according to Deiorio. "As far as where do we go now, we are pulling our strengths together to become advocates for our field. It seems that the rush has past now that the Tonys are over, and it is about educating and advocating for our discipline for the long run."

An interview between Chance founder and sound designer Fitz Patton and Cecelia Friederichs of United Scenic Artists Local 829 at the time of the Tony decision in 2014 can be found here: http://howlround.com/tony-awards-decision-on-sound-design-getting-to-the-reversal
