Remembering the Tony and Emmy award winning powerhouse of an actress Mary Alice, who starred in the original Broadway production of Fences, portrayed the mother of three singing music sensations in the film Sparkle (1976) and appeared as The Oracle in The Matrix Revolutions.

Alice played Nurse Margaret opposite Robin Williams and Robert De Niro in Awakenings (1990), the family matriarch dealing with a disruptive guest (Danny Glover) in Charles Burnett’s To Sleep With Anger (1990), and a woman whose son was struck by a car in the South Bronx in Brian De Palma’s The Bonfire of the Vanities (1990).

On television Mary Alice was known for her roles as Leticia "Lettie" Bostic on the NBC sitcom A Different World (1987–1989). Alice won a Tony Award for Best Actress for her performance in the first Broadway stage production of August Wilson's Fences (1987-1988), playing opposite to James Earl Jones.

Born Mary Alice Smith in Indianola, Mississippi, Alice showed an early and natural ability for acting, and began her stage career in her hometown. Her family moved from Mississippi to Chicago when she was two years old. Mary Alice graduated from Chicago Teacher's College (now known as Chicago State University), and taught at an elementary school.

Alice died Wednesday July 27, 2022 in her Manhattan apartment, an NYPD spokesperson said. She was 80. Rest in everlasting peace queen #MaryAlice.

The Greensboro Sit-Ins were non-violent protests in Greensboro, North Carolina, which lasted from February 1, 1960 to July 25, 1960. The protests led to the Woolworth Department Store chain ending its policy of racial segregation in its stores in the southern United States. The Greensboro Sit-Ins were the first prominent sit-ins of the civil rights movement.

The “Greensboro Four,” the four young black men who staged the first sit-ins in Greensboro—Ezell Blair Jr. (now known as Jibreel Khazan), David Richmond, Franklin McCain, and Joseph McNeil—were students at North Carolina and Agricultural and Technical College. They were influenced by the non-violent protest teachings and strategies of Mohandas Gandhi, as well as the early freedom rides organized by the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) in 1947.

As the sit-ins occurred in Greensboro, students from other North Carolina sites, including Winston-Salem, Durham, Raleigh, and Charlotte, staged similar protests. The sit-in movement spread to Nashville, Tennessee; Atlanta, Georgia; and Richmond, Virginia, by early March. The Greensboro Woolworth’s finally served blacks at its lunch counter on July 25, 1960.

The Greensboro Sit-Ins were the catalyst for the formation of Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) which would become one of most important organizations of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s. The International Civil Rights Center and Museum in Greensboro, North Carolina, has collections related to the Greensboro Sit-Ins.

Alice Augusta Ball born on July 24, 1892 was a chemist who developed the "Ball Method", the most effective treatment for leprosy during the early 20th century. She was the first woman and first Black person to receive a master's degree from the University of Hawaii, and was also the university's first female and Black chemistry professor.

Ball attended Seattle High School and achieved top grades in the sciences. She graduated from Seattle High School in 1910. Ball went on to study chemistry at the University of Washington, earning a bachelor's degree in pharmaceutical chemistry in 1912 and a second bachelor's degree in the science of pharmacy two years later in 1914. Alongside her pharmacy instructor, Williams Dehn, she published a 10-page article, "Benzoylations in Ether Solution", in the Journal of the American Chemical Society. Publishing an article in a respected scientific journal was an uncommon accomplishment for a woman and especially for a Black woman at this time.

At the University of Hawaii, Ball investigated the chemical makeup and active principle of Piper methysticum (kava) for her master's thesis. Because of this work, she was contacted by Dr. Harry T. Hollmann at Kalihi Hospital in Hawaii, who needed an assistant for his research into the treatment of leprosy.

At the time, leprosy or Hansen's Disease was a highly stigmatized disease with virtually no chance of recovery. People diagnosed with leprosy were exiled to the Hawaiian island of Molokai with the expectation that they would die there. The best treatment available was chaulmoogra oil, from the seeds of the Hydnocarpus wightianus tree from the Indian subcontinent, which had been used medicinally from as early as the 1300s. But the treatment was not very effective, and every method of application had problems.

At age 23, Ball developed a technique to make the oil injectable and absorbable by the body. Her technique involved isolating ester compounds from the oil and chemically modifying them, producing a substance that retained the oil's therapeutic properties and was absorbed by the body when injected. Ball was unable to publish her revolutionary findings before her untimely death. Arthur L. Dean, a chemist and Ball's graduate study advisor, dean of the college, and later president of the university, was privy to details of the process she developed.

#AliceBall died on December 31, 1916, at age 24. She had become ill during her research and returned to Seattle for treatment a few months before her death. After Ball's death, Dean undertook further trials and by 1919, a college chemistry laboratory was producing large quantities of the injectable chaulmoogra extract.

On November 6, 2020, a satellite named after her (ÑuSat 9 or "Alice", COSPAR 2020-079A) was launched into space. On February 28, 2022, Hawaii Governor David Ige signed a proclamation declaring February 28 “#AliceAugustaBall Day" in Hawaii at a special recognition ceremony on the University of Hawaii at Mānoa campus.

#OnThisDay in 1919, what became known as the Chicago race riots began in reaction to the death of a Black youth who was stoned and died after swimming into an area reserved for Whites only on the shores of Lake Michigan. The police declined to arrest the White man who Black observers held responsible for the incident. ⁣

Indignant crowds gathered on the beach, and fights eventually broke out between Black and White mobs. Violence escalated, and by the time the violence ended on August 3, 23 Black people and 15 White people had been killed. Thousands of Black families lost their homes due to arson. ⁣

The events in Chicago were the most severe of dozens of targeted racialized attacks that occurred after World War I throughout the United States in the summer of 1919, which became known as the “Red Summer.” #APeoplesJourney #ANationsStory

Never knew this…

Never knew this…

Alexandre Dumas born on July 24, 1802 was a Black French born novelist whose books, "The Three Musketeers," "The Count of Monte Cristo" and "The Man in the Iron Mask," have made him one of the most widely read authors in the world. His novels have been adapted since the early twentieth century into nearly 200 films.

The illegitimate son of Dumas père and Marie Catherine Labay, a seamstress was born in the French colony of Saint-Domingue (present-day Haiti). Raised exclusively by his mother for the first seven years of his life, Dumas was recognized by his white father only once his success as a writer enabled him to support his child.

The younger Dumas was sent to boarding school by his father, an experience he detested as his classmates ridiculed him. He abandoned formal schooling at age 17, adopting a bohemian lifestyle that by his early twenties left him deeply in debt. With the benefit of his father’s name, Dumas began writing mostly autobiographical novels and poems.

Dumas achieved financial stability and literary renown with the 1852 stage production of La Dame aux Camélias, a story of a Parisian courtesan who discovers the redemptive power of love before dying tragically in her lover’s arms. Dumas was one of the originators of the “problem play,” a form of realistic drama that emerged in 19th-century Europe. Often featuring characters of the lower and middle classes, problem plays addressed a particular societal ill and proposed its remedy.

In 1864 Dumas married Nadezhda von Knorring in Moscow. The couple had two daughters. Two months after Nadezhda’s death in 1895 (and just five months before his own passing), Dumas married Henriette Régnier de La Brière. The author of twenty-two novels and more than two dozen plays, Dumas was admitted to the Académie française in 1874.

In 1894 he received the Légion d’honneur, France’s highest civilian honor. #AlexandreDumas died in Marly-le-Roi, France on November 27, 1895. He is buried in Montmarte Cemetery in Paris. His final novel, The Knight of Sainte-Hermine was not published until 2008.

The unfinished manuscript for the third novel in his Sainte-Hermine trilogy was found and completed by Claude Schopp, who pieced together the mouse-eaten document and filled in the gaps with his extensive knowledge of Dumas’s writing was published in English in The Last Cavalier.

Leroy "Satchel" Paige was born on July 7, 1906. "The best and fastest pitcher I've ever faced”, according to Joe DiMaggio, Paige’s baseball career spanned over five decades. Pronounced the greatest pitcher in the history of the Negro Leagues, Paige compiled such feats as 64 consecutive scoreless innings, a stretch of 21 straight wins, and a 31-4 record in 1933. For 22 years, Paige mauled the competition in front of record crowds when and wherever he pitched.

In 1948, the Cleveland Indians were in desperate need of good pitching for their pennant race. Jackie Robinson had already broken the color lines in baseball a year earlier as major league’s first black ball player. Owner and promoter Bill Veeck, knew very well the legend of Paige, but was concerned about his fitness and age. Veeck felt it necessary to test his accuracy before finally offering him a league contract. As the story is told, Veeck placed a cigarette on the ground to be used as a home plate. Paige took aim at the virtually nonexistent target and fired five fastballs, all but one sailing directly over the cigarette. Veeck amazed, hired him immediately, and at age 42 Paige became the oldest major league rookie in history. With Paige’s contributions the Indians won the pennant.

In addition to Cleveland, Paige played for St. Louis and Kansas City. When his Major League career was completed, he compiled a modest 28-31 record with a 3.29 ERA. He also served as coach for the Atlanta Braves in 1968. What made Paige so memorable was his longevity in the game. The main reason his age was so difficult to track was his seemingly endless success. He rarely answered questions about his age, and when he did, he replied with the classic line: "Age is a question of mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter.” #SatchelPaige died of a heart attack after a power failure at his home in Kansas City on June 8, 1982. In 1971, Leroy "Satchel" Paige joined the very best in history in the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Remembering Miriam Makeba.. R.I.P. ஆܔ 🥀
Miriam Makeba (Zenzile Miriam Makeba: March 4, 1932 – Nov 9, 2008), nicknamed Mama Africa, was a Grammy Award-winning South African singer and civil rights activist known for becoming the first African artist to globally popularize African music. She is best known for the song "Pata Pata", first recorded in 1957 and released in the U.S. in 1967. Along with Belafonte she received a Grammy Award for her 1965 album An Evening with Belafonte/Makeba.

Makeba campaigned against the South African system of apartheid. After apartheid was disbanded in 1990, Makeba returned to South Africa after 30 years. She continued recording and performing, including a 1991 album with Nina Simone and Dizzy Gillespie, and appeared in the 1992 film Sarafina!.

She was a strong supporter of human rights and continued her activism to her last breath. Upon her death, former South African President Nelson Mandela said that "her music inspired a powerful sense of hope in all of us."
