THE CHAMPION WHO SACRIFICED HIS CAREER TO SAVE LIVES
In 1976, world swimming champion Shavarsh Karapetyan was running near a lake in Armenia when he saw a bus fall into the water with dozens of passengers trapped inside. Without waiting for help, he jumped into the freezing lake and began breaking windows underwater to rescue people.
The conditions were extremely difficult. The bus was sinking quickly, visibility was minimal, and every dive caused severe physical strain. Despite this, Karapetyan repeatedly entered the water and managed to rescue around 20 people.
The effort caused serious physical consequences, including severe pneumonia and injuries that deeply affected his sports career.
