We are happy to announce @cobykennedy ‘s Jimmy Crow and the Imaginary Thug, a solo exhibition of sculptural and 2D studio work by multidisciplinary artist Coby Kennedy opening on Thursday, February 25, 2021 at @superchiefgalleryny. The show, which serves as the New York based creative's second solo outing with the gallery, centers around a narrative of afrofuturism, born from America's dark history of racial conflict and set in a near future world directly reflecting today’s mass media & propaganda.

This is a great opportunity to see Kennedy’s work in person, who is also on view at our CURRENT| UNDERCURRENT show.

We are pleased to announce that Kimberly Becoat’s work is featured in LatchKey Gallery’s exhibition Last Supper, a group exhibition curated by Tamecca Seril. This is a great opportunity to see in person her variety of art materials and her investigation of urban displacement. Make sure to join a virtual conversation tonight at 7 pm! (Details below)

The exhibition at LatchKey Gallery will simultaneously be on view by appointment at 323 Canal Street, NYC and in special partnership at Industry City, Brooklyn, from February 9 – March 20, 2021. Showcasing the works of twelve Black female artists working across multiple mediums, Last Supper is a celebration of fellowship. The exhibition considers a deep history of Black Woman artists’ finding solace in one another, and organizing and materializing movements through radical thinking, innovation, and experimentation within and out of the art establishment. The works presented explore themes of representation and cultural histories, experiences, and perceptions.

Davis Rios Ferreira exposes the horrors of colonialism and the North Atlantic Slave Trade by subverting the shipping industry's iconography. The detail, depicting sailors throwing an African captive overboard, makes one recall the 1840 painting Slave Ship (Slavers Throwing Overboard the Dead and Dying, Typhoon Coming On) by J. W. M. Turner. The painting depicts the Zong, a British ship whose captain, in 1781, threw enslaved Africans overboard to collect insurance money only available for those "lost at sea."

Kimberly Becoat’s Seneca Village series explores Central Park as a site of repeated violence against Black people. The park’s history begins with the destruction of the Black community of Seneca Village to make room for a park that would mostly benefit New York’s wealthy white residents. A statue honoring J. Marion Sims—the “father of gynecology”—was removed from Central Park in 2018. The statue and its dedication made no mention of the enslaved African women Sims experimented upon without consent or anesthetic. The Central Park Five, a 1989 case of five wrongfully convicted Black teens, resulted in young Black men spending years of their lives in prison. In 2020, Amy Cooper attempted to weaponize the police against a birdwatching Black man and merely asked her to keep her dog on a leash.

Generative Death in The Ruins — Arcade Project

Media artist Claudia Hart cites Haraway as an influence on her show The Ruins at bitforms gallery. Like Haraway’s cyborgs, Hart’s artworks defy simple categorization, existing simultaneously in virtual and physical spaces and drawing from sources as disparate as Matisse, memento mori still-life, and video games.

Arcade Project’s M. Charlene Stevens sat down with Claudia Hart to discuss her work’s place in art history and why this Eurocentric and patriarchal history needs to die so that new ways of seeing and thinking can potentially thrive.
