This is my amazing Great Grandma Fern’s graduation photo.
Just typing her name makes me smile.
My Great Grandma Fern got married when she was very young. After having three beautiful daughters, her husband (who I won’t name because he was awful) became a violent alcoholic.
He would hurt Fern and their three girls. My Grandma Marcella remembers being chased around the house by her father with sheep shears when she was only three years old.
When her oldest was 8 and her youngest was 3, Fern decided enough was enough.
In 1946, this strong, incredible woman kicked him out.
In 1946. She raised three wonderful girls ALL ON HER OWN as a beautician in the FORTIES.
My Grandma shares stories about being bullied, beaten up, and even made fun of by teachers at school because her mom was divorced.
I remember one of the last times I saw Fern. We were on a road trip, staying at a hotel in Wyoming (close to where she raised her girls). While we snuggled on the bed, she gave me some of the best advice I didn’t even know I needed.
I was only thirteen, and she said, “You don’t need anyone in this world. Don’t cling to anyone for anything. And don’t let that make you bitter. Let it make you thankful for when help does come.”
Rest in peace, Fern.
