Founded in 2002 by undergraduate English majors, CJLC acts as an interdisciplinary forum centered around literature, culture and politics. The journal is published once a year and includes articles, reviews, interviews and original artwork. As an undergraduate publication, CJLC attempts to examine the world around us in a way that is informed by academia but not subsumed by it. CJLC also hosts eve

nts, including panel discussions with academics and writers (past topics have included Taste, Geopolitics, Cosmopolitanism, and Occupy), and a seminar series where Columbia professors and graduate students talk about their research in a casual setting. For more information about CJLC, please email the editors at [email protected]

Columbia Journal of Literary Criticism is hosting a screening and panel discussion of a Chinese independent documentary—Li Yifan’s We Were Smart (杀马特我爱你, 2019), followed by a discussion with Prof. Ying Qian and Prof. Nicholas Bartlett, with the director Li Yifan joining on Zoom.

🦄🦋🪲🦐🦖🐠🌸🪐⚡️🌈☄️☀️❄️☂️🫑🛼🧩

About the film:
“杀马特” (Shamate), a term adapted from the English word “smart,” describes a subculture that emerged in the 2000s among young, rural-born migrant workers in China. Simultaneously a fashion style, an internet-based community, and a cultural identity, it provided its members with a sense of belonging and a platform for self-expression, amplifying voices often silenced amid China’s rapid industrial boom. We Were Smart (2019) vividly captures the Shamate community’s experiences through firsthand accounts, offering a profound exploration of a generation’s journey to navigate love, identity, and the intricate challenges of adapting to an unfamiliar urban landscape while grappling with the demands of labor.

Location: Lerner Roone Arledge Cinema
Time: Tuesday February 4th, 2025

Screening starts
Panel discussion @9:05pm

All CU/BC students, faculty, and affiliates are welcome.
Please RSVP via link in bio or QR code in the flyer!
