At midnight tonight (Sept 1st) watch the premiere of Tennessee Rising: The Dawn of Tennessee Williams presented by wild project - VOD link https://vimeo.com/ondemand/tennesseerising
.
based on the life & career of Tennessee Williams
written & performed by Jacob Storms @therealjacobstorms
originally directed for the stage by Alan Cumming @alancummingreally
.
Tennessee Rising: The Dawn of Tennessee Williams* (United Solo Award) sheds light on the unexplored early years (1939-1945) of young Williams. The world is on the brink of world war II and a young writer named Tom has finally escaped the family home only to be confronted with the harsh realities of life. To get ahead, he creates a new character for himself to play, Tennessee Williams, and so begins his meandering journey wherein we meet the people in his life who will go on to inspire his most iconic characters all while young Williams grapples with first love, professional triumph and torment, heartbreak, and ultimately "the catastrophe of success." If you thought you knew Tennessee Williams, think again!

The journey of becoming a fully-realized adult is full of dichotomies. We emulate people, but also learn to defy their expectations of us. We learn that there is a difference between the stories we tell and the experiences weโ€™re actually having. These ideas of authenticity and performance are embedded in the filmโ€” and the process of making it and exercising the power of framing it through editing. Like many acts of testimony, it contains both scripted and improvised moments, which blur the boundary between whatโ€™s โ€œrealโ€ and whatโ€™s not.

Yes, mostly the fact that Jack doesnโ€™t disclose whether their brother is still living, which prevents a sense of resolution. Later, thereโ€™s unspoken tension with Jack wanting to get back home and remove themself from the experience of performing. Iโ€™m interested in presenting conflicts and tensions in the way they often manifest in our actual relationships: as subtleties, rather than confrontations.

In theater, playwrights and/or directors generally have the control of the material and its interpretation during planning and rehearsingโ€” but then the actors ultimately control the showโ€™s outcome through their performances. In film, the final control belongs to the director and/or editor, because everything can be interpreted and decided during post-production.

Currently Iโ€™m in post on a short film called Things That Didnโ€™t Happen. This is the first period film Iโ€™ve made (set in the 1970s). As the title suggests, it also deals with ambiguity as a thematic element. In this case the story revolves around a car accident.

If there was a film that could pinpoint the moment it was โ€œStranger Than Fictionโ€ from 2006. It was the first movie I really saw. I remember, for the first time in a theater, actually being moved and affected by what I was seeing and ultimately I just thought that was so cool. That a movie could affect me in such a way.

I would alter that to semi-autobiographical.

Whatโ€™s really rooted in my own experience was the feeling behind the characters' emotions. The protagonists are at two vastly different ends of the coming out timeline. In my own relationship I had started seeing my close friend who had never dated a woman before. Our relationship shifted naturally and beautifully but at the start it brought out my own insecurities Iโ€™d experienced in the past and those Iโ€™d seen in other queer relationships. With every one word said there's an entire essay that can be extracted. Many of my queer peers saw similarities between the characters and their own experiences in their wlw relationships. And more specifically, in the subtle power dynamics that are woven in.

When I originally wrote the script I got mixed feedback and it was the same with the film. Some saw it as the start of a relationship, others the end. Ultimately the ambiguity was the whole point in making the film. How anything said can mean a world of difference depending on the context. The hope in making "A Neighborhood Away" was that while these characters' context wasn't made clear, the emotion was.

I was inspired by an experience I had at a fancy bridal shower where everyone was married, had children or were just at very different places in their lives to me. I think all of those things are wonderful, but at that moment I felt like an outsider. I ended up being seated next to another woman who turned out to be the one other person who felt exactly like I did. We bonded instantly as the odd ones out at a party, we were the trouble-makers and that felt exciting and dangerous. I imagined a version of this where we might have escaped on our own adventure for the night, and I wrote GoodNight based on this idea. I also wanted to write it because I had spoken to so many women who had experienced feelings of being "stuck in a box" or wanting to be able to speak more freely about their sexuality. GoodNight is a little bit of a tease that touches the surface of that realm, but I hope it sparks the excitement of the attraction between two strangers in an unusual situation who don't know if they can or cannot be together.

I did feel nervous to shoot this film and put a really vulnerable part of myself out there for people to see. Itโ€™s always scary when you don't know what the response will be.

On top of that, it was also the most incredibly hard time for me as my Dad passed away only a few months before we filmed. I had to re-write some of the dialogue in the film that talked about him because there was no way I was going to be able to deliver the lines without breaking down completely.

I met Lain through mutual friends in filmmaking and we had chatted a few times about potentially working together on a project. I loved that Lain and I had a really similar appreciation for "dark optimism" as she puts it. Our ideas were really aligned on the visual aspects and overall feeling for this film. Lain is also really involved in Women in Film LA, and I appreciate her drive for creating more female driven films.

Lain and I definitely spent time together creating the look of the film and talking through the shots with our DP, Erik Smith. I can be meticulous when it comes to the details, and Lain did an incredible job helping achieve what I was looking for, while also adding so much of her own great ideas to the script and the aesthetic. I have to also give a big shoutout to our DP, Erik, who completely knocked it out of the park in terms of creating the shots we were hoping for and more.

My first piece of advice is, if you haven't watched 'This is John', by the Duplass Brothers, it's about 7 minutes long and it's on YouTube and you just have to watch it.

The other piece of advice I have is, however scared you are to put your work out, just go for it, because there's so much learning that happens in the process and the mistakes and the hurdles. And then when you make the next one you'll get better. And the next one, even better. And the other part about putting out scary work is that usually the reason it's scary is because maybe there's something really honest in there that someone watching the film might be able to connect to. And that's really special.

I have another dark comedy short that is ready to go into pre-production.

In New York I adore everything about the East Village, it's the first place I landed when I moved there from New Zealand in 2010. But also now, whenever I get to return to New York I crave the oysters and dirty martinis and Maison Premiere in Brooklyn.

My fave local spot in Venice,CA where I now live is called the Venice Ale House, it's right on the beach and definitely worth a visit!

We are proud to share the video from our first single off our True Joy CD, "Avalanche." Co-written by Nini Camps and our good friend Stephen Kellogg and inspired by the horrific events surrounding The People V. Turner, a ground breaking r**e trial that helped fuel the me too movement and gave voice to so many. An all female crew of amazing artists help us create the final result from the earliest tracks recorded with producer/singer/songwriter, Diane Scanlon, mixed by Rachel Alina , video directed by Katie Taber and Ellie Gravitte, video edited by Valerie Lasser, hair and makeup by Salon Solis (Graciela and Sulma) and filmed at wild project (Ana Mari De Quesada and Kia Rogers). The one and only AMber Hotwheelz took care of literally everything. We did enlist a few amazing male allies as well in the creative process - Alex Petersen was our Director of Photography, Eric McNatt caught some stills from the shoot, Whynot Jansveld mastered the final mix, and as mentioned previously, the beautiful man that is Stephen Kellogg helped Nini put thoughts and words to music. We hope you enjoy the final product. #cmonRISEUP #Avalanche #TrueJoy #femaleempowerment

Jaksndbdhaksnsbbs what just happened??!! I got a call on Friday from Ian Havens about filling a supporting role for a full length play showing that night. Without seeing the script I said yes and headed to the theatre. I have only performed in plays on Zoom so Iโ€™ve been dreaming of an opportunity like this. Of course I imagined Iโ€™d nail my audition and have weeks to prep but life surprises you and I love surprises. I then met the wonderful cast and crew I got to spend the next three days with who quickly welcomed me into their group, helped me with my hair and we got right to playing! The cherry on top was Thirdwing combined my two favorite worlds of film and theatre so we have somehow bottled up that magic. Now that Iโ€™ve had a hit of NYC theatre Iโ€™m going to keep chasing that high, thanks for having me in this wild project ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿผโ€๐ŸŽจ๐ŸŽญ
