Every Friday night for three years she packs two hundred and fourteen lunch bags alone in a community kitchen that smells like industrial soap and silence.
Nobody signed up to help. The volunteer sheet on the refrigerator has her name on every line for thirty-six consecutive months.
She stopped asking people to come eight months ago. She just shows up.
Tonight at 9:47 PM the back door opened and a man walked in wearing an apron, carrying supplies, sleeves already rolled up.
He did not introduce himself. He did not explain why he was late. He just started packing the next bag.
Some people wait three years for a volunteer. Some volunteers wait three years for the right Friday.
If you know someone who has been showing up alone for something the world forgot about, they are probably not going to share this themselves.
