Baraa, 7, poses for a portrait in Madaba, Jordan. Bara?a and her brother Ahmad, 21, can no longer afford medication for a blood disorder they have, called thalassaemia. The last of their medication will run out and cannot afford to pay the $2800 a month they need for blood transfusion and medication. Having no medication will lead to fatigue, organ failure, even death. Before the government made the changes It was heavily subsidized at a low cost of 0.25 cents (US$0.35) a month. This photo was taken as part of a story for UNHCR that highlights the difficulties refugees are facing in accessing healthcare and medicine in Jordan after the Jordanian government decided to cut healthcare subsidies from refugees.

Lebanon 2018-2021

My great grandmother, Sito Linda, was raised just a few hundred feet from where I sit writing this today in my apartment near Sassine Square. In 1925 she and her husband, Mitchell Maalouf, from the small mountain village of Kfarakab, emigrated to Post, Texas, and would remain there for the rest of their lives. The port which they left from in Beirut, would violently explode nearly 100 years later in 2020, killing 218, causing $15+ billion in damages, and displacing some 300,000 people. Three years prior, I had relocated to Lebanon, in order to discover my mother’s roots.

22-year-old Syrian refugee Hanan prays in a shattered home in the city of Huwaijeh in the northern region of Jordan. This photo is part of a long term project 'A Familiar Stranger' a series of photographic and video images that challenges post-colonial constructs and generalizations about the femininity, religion and agency of Arab women. Often labeled as naively subservient or mindlessly radicalized, the women in 'A Familiar Stranger' defy such stereotypes and unabashedly project their individuality through how they dress or inhabit spaces.

Christians comprise less than one percent of Iran’s population, however, they are enjoying the freedom to perform their rituals and celebrate their festivities. Most of the Christians in Iran are Armenians who have lived here for centuries. Assyrians, Catholics, Protestants, and Evangelical Christians constitute the rest of Christians in Iran.
