Some moments of life as a picture
Why am I in this body? Why my body is different? Why am I not him and he is not me? Why is she covered, and her body is soaked in blood? Why has her body become a disaster for her life?
Questions are changing one by one or two by two, they become images, the image of those who were women and life, wishes and dreams, the dream of freedom. In the cities, villages, on the streets, and allies, they become outcry, who was soaked with blood, and they show up in the new body in the image. The image of thousands and millions who shout, raise their voices and cross the boundaries of villages, cities, and countries of the world. The image of women of my country!
I listen to their life story at the night, and in the daytime I’m their co-traveler, embracing their blood-soaked bodies and taking them from a mountain to the next one, perhaps I can find a calm place full of freedom so I can bury them in a piece of soil. They are resurrected and leave the body buried in the soil and raise their voice and visit everywhere, they knock on the closed doors of every house and raise their voice for freedom, so every human on the earth can be aware of what they’ve been through. They are now outside your home. Open the door, hug them and receive their message.
If you wear a hat, a veil, and a head scarf, remove it so Jina and other Jinas can see your free faces, they are the messengers of freedom!

عاشورای ۸۸
From middle East images archive Iran, Tehran 2009

It was meant to be an event when Iranians unite to honour one of Shia Islam's most revered martyrs. Instead, it turned into a day of bloodshed that left at least nine people dead, many more injured and the country facing a potentially unbridgeable political divide amid an escalating cycle of violence.

The Shia mourning ceremony of Ashura became a confrontation between Iran's torn political factions when the government unleashed a furious crackdown on pro-opposition protesters that included orders to open fire.

Photographing men, especially big groups of men, is always entering a tacit game for me.

There can be so much testosterone, machinist comments but also gentleness and seduction - it is a complex realm I enter on tip toes while faking some confidence.

Yet I love it. While women get daily comments about their bodies, I feel entering in this men’s arena with a camera creates a change in the dynamic of power. It reverses it.

No matter what they are saying to me, I direct them, and they are posing for me.

I remember, that day on the corniche, a XXL muscle man asked me if I had a boyfriend. To which I responded “ زوج عندي” a sentence that I know too well to prevent any flirt, and simply meaning “I have a husband”.

The man discredits it and replies it is not serious, and that HE could instead be my husband.

So I looked at the chest tattoo, reminded him of our discussion about our trips to Karbala and said :

“Imam Hussein is watching you, and I don’t think he would be so happy hearing this”

To which his whole crew applauded and laughed.

Every year on the 14th of Farvardin (the 3rd of April), more than 50,000 people from all over Iran go to the “Zeinal-khan” arena in Esfarayen to watch a wrestling match. This tournament is one of Iran’s most famous local sports, where Olympic athletes and world champions participate in the championship. “Choukha” is the name of the clothing that the wrestlers wear here, consisting of a short cape that wrestlers tighten with a white shawl.

On March 19th 2003, 10:16 PM, George W. Bush, the president of the United States declared at the oval office: “at this hour, American and coalition forces are in the early stages of military operations to disarm Iraq, to free its people and to defend the world from grave danger.”

On 20 March 2003 at approximately 02:30 UTC, at 05:34 local time, explosions were heard in Baghdad.

There have been between 275,000 and 306,000 Iraqi civilians killed by direct violence since the U.S. invasion.
A precise death toll, though, is almost impossible to calculate.

On March 19th 2003, George W. Bush, finished the declaration saying: “the dangers to our country and the world will be overcome. We will pass through this time of peril and carry on the work of peace. We will defend our freedom. We will bring freedom to others and we will prevail.”

The last US troops withdrew from Iraq on 18 December 2011.

Christians comprise less than one percent of Iran’s population, however, they are enjoying the freedom to perform their rituals and celebrate their festivities. Most of the Christians in Iran are Armenians who have lived here for centuries. Assyrians, Catholics, Protestants, and Evangelical Christians constitute the rest of Christians in Iran.
