When you write a screenplay, you unusually only get 2-3 adjectives to describe your character. But one of the fun things about directing is creating character descriptions and mood boards for your wardrobe, hair and makeup team.
brought me so much joy with all the Halloween costumes she put our senior citizens in and / killed it with our inspired Trixie. Here’s an excerpt from one of my favorite emails I’ve ever gotten to write:
EPISODE 4 | Season: Fall | 📸 .matt
Popo - This isn't in the script yet, but since we are trying to do different seasons for each episode, I thought it would be funny for it to be Halloween in the nursing home and for all the seniors to be in costumes. But like, in a sad way, where it's like they were dropped off by their families and the home is trying to make it festive but the seniors don't really care and maybe the costumes have even been put on them. I'm open for ideas, but I thought a pumpkin could be cute for Popo? I think the nursing home will be rather sparse there will be 5 extras as seniors. Of the seniors, 4 will have something sad and lazy like cat ears, a crown, a tutu, maybe a ghost costume? And then maybe one senior that’s really into it is Christmas tree. Oh, and let's have the care worker be a samurai or a geisha just to show he’s extra offensive.
Trixie - So I'm really fascinated by how Gen-Z kids are post-race, post-gender, post-genre and I think that can be reflected in her style. I think Trixie worships Billie Eilish, probably wears baggy clothes, and has space buns. She's probably q***r/ so over heteronormativity. I’d love to incorporate rainbow socks or sleeves. As an alternative Girl Scout, she either has an army vest or jacket with a mix of girl scout badges but also activist ones(think Emma Gonzolas or Lindsey Weir from Freaks and Geeks). Oh and also maybe a feminist t-shirt that says Notorious RBG.
