What our Clients and Colleagues are saying about us:

“I speak from experience as I’ve had the pleasure and privilege of working with Michael Thomas Cain on two film shoots. His shot selection, framing, editing, and just general all-around skill makes each shoot a joy and a win. Go learn from a maestro who also happens to be a very nice guy.”
-T.J. Elliott, Writer and Executive Producer, ALMS and THE JESTER’S WIFE

“As one of the cast members lucky enough to work with Michael, I’ve rarely felt as I did on this, that I was working with a director who had REALLY thought about each scene. Made an enormous difference. The film will be great!”
-Ed Altman, Actor, TOP HATE

“…please never hesitate to call if you need me…Good luck with everything! Many thanks for everything.”
-Sean Young, Actress, TOP HATE

“I watched the edit all the way through. It’s very good. It looks great…I think the movie is very funny and well directed. The actors are really good.”
-Joe Queenan, Writer and Executive Producer, TOP HATE

“Awesome working with you…I think the symmetry shows in the film. I’m also glad you got to showcase your talents and directing vision!”
-Mark Levitt, Writer and Executive Producer, “Thumb Wrestler,” “Oatmelio’s,” “Jazz John,” and “Outta This World”

“Funny, well-made film.”
-The London-Worldwide Comedy Short Film Festival, “Thumb Wrestler”

“My Director Michael Thomas Cain who I admire and respect. Every actor should get a taste of his work."
-Linda A. Alago, Actress, "Thumb Wrestler"

“Cain’s script is sharp and subtle…The script unfolds gradually to reveal darker and darker revelations…I found it to be an absolutely hilarious slow burner that trucks along at a good pace and leaves you wanting a little more. Cain also does a fine job directing a talented cast of two.”
-Richard Hinojosa, Review, ENOUGH’S ENOUGH!

“FIFTEEN MINUTES WITH ELLEN is an emotionally charged spectacle written by Andrew Selig and directed by Michael Thomas Cain.”
-Danielle Boss, Review, FIFTEEN MINUTES WITH ELLEN

“Such an honor being able to work alongside you all!”

“I’m happy to have been a part of this, and I have you to thank. I think it turned out really good, and I think it should do well in the festival circuit.”
-Mark Parsia, Actor, TOP HATE, “Eliminated,” “Thumb Wrestler,” and “Jazz John”

Sidney Lumet shot the hostage scenes in Dog Day Afternoon after collapsing from exhaustion in his Manhattan office the night before, hiding the fact that he had lost twelve pounds in three weeks and was rewriting dialogue at 3:00 a.m. to keep Al Pacino’s performance sharper than the studio dared to allow. Critics later praised realism. Lumet was working on the edge of burnout.

The studio originally demanded a tight script. Lumet ignored them. He wanted actors to improvise inside controlled structure, so he spent weeks transcribing real police transcripts from the 1972 robbery the film was based on. His production notebook lists exact page counts: 41 pages rewritten on August 12, 33 on August 13, 29 on August 14. His assistant remembered him eating nothing but black coffee and crackers.

The night before filming the street showdown, Lumet fainted in his office. A production manager found him slumped over marked-up script pages, pulse racing. Lumet refused medical attention. His only request was for the lighting plan. He told them, “I need the crowd real, not pretty.” That meant shooting in Brooklyn heat with 300 extras, live traffic noise, and a police perimeter recreated with off-duty officers paid $60 each.

On set the next morning, Pacino delivered the “Attica” chant. Lumet had not scripted the rhythm. He whispered to Pacino, “Push it farther.” Pacino did. The crowd erupted. Lumet kept cameras rolling for nearly two minutes straight, a choice that terrified Warner Bros. because long takes risked overruns. When a studio executive visited the location that afternoon, Lumet handed him the footage without comment. The executive later admitted, “We knew he had lightning.”

Lumet finished the film ahead of schedule even after the collapse. He refused overtime pay and marked his own time cards with the note “covered by director.” The movie earned six Oscar nominations and cemented a new era of gritty realism.

Sidney Lumet did not shape American cinema with comfort. He did it with stamina, discipline, and a level of sacrifice so intense he sometimes had to be carried from the work he refused to pause.
