Located at 13 Brentford Road in Kingston, Studio One was far more than just a recording studio and record label: it was the true "University of Reggae" and the birthplace of the riddims that, to this day, continue to make dancefloors rumble across the globe.

Born out of the vision of Clement "Coxsone" Dodd (who began by revolutionizing the streets with his powerhouse Downbeat Sound System), Studio One opened its doors in 1963 to write the golden history of Ska, Rocksteady, and Early Reggae. Its fierce, head-to-head rivalry with Duke Reid's Treasure Isle served as the ultimate engine driving the island's creativity to stratospheric heights.

Behind that legendary sound—with its heavy emphasis on basslines and immortal rhythmic patterns—stood the masterminds of a very young Jackie Mittoo on keyboards and Leroy Sibbles (lead singer of The Heptones) on bass and arrangements. Virtually all island royalty passed through its microphones: The Skatalites, Bob Marley & The Wailers, Alton Ellis, Horace Andy, Ken Boothe, John Holt, The Ethiopians, and even Burning Spear (Winston Rodney), who found his roots sound there. Likewise, The Abyssinians recorded their opus "Satta Massagana" there in 1969, though Coxsone hesitated to release it, deeming it "hard to sell" (until the band bought back the master tapes and turned it into a monumental anthem).

Although in the mid-1970s new spaces like Channel One and Lee "Scratch" Perry's Black Ark took over at the vanguard, Studio One continued releasing essential Rub-a-Dub gems with Sugar Minott and Freddie McGregor before Coxsone closed the studio in the '80s and relocated operations to New York.

New York still has record shops where the music thrill does not require a painful price tag. Used vinyl sits within reach, and bargain bins can reward anyone patient enough to keep digging.
