"Late soul legend Bobby Womack's 1984 song "American Dream," which uses part of Martin Luther King Jr's 1961 speech of the same name, feels as relevant now as it did 36 years ago."

The month of June is dedicated to recognizing the importance of African-American music to global culture and calling on the people of the United States to study, reflect on, and celebrate African-American music. June is Black Music Month.

Did you know? With the encouragement of legendary songwriter-producer Kenny Gamble, President Jimmy Carter recognized June as African-American Music Month in 1979. While observed annually, an official proclamation was never signed. In 2000, Gamble’s ex-wife and music activist Dyana Williams laid the groundwork for President Bill Clintons passing of the African-American Music Bill, formally establishing Black Music Month as a national observance.

As we close out this #BlackMusicMonth, we invite you to enjoy a collection of top hits from influential black artists of the 50s and 60s inspired by Sam Cooke. Visit the link below to stream the curated playlist "Black Music Month - Inspired By Sam Cooke” now on Spotify.
