Our reading will be an antidote to the daily bite of the ‘junkyard dog’ and could restore our sense of beauty and reason.

My Corona resolution: Taking better care of Atropos Press, the public face of the 'applied philosophy' effort I realized in the Nineties with the founding of the European Graduate School, Media and Communication Division. The books you select for your private library are decisive - to them you can quietly turn in times of overpowering media noise. This kind of reading is essential for thinking anew. Our independent Press evokes the third of the Greek Fates, Atropos, in her signature gesture of cutting the thread to established life (and knowledge). Only a violent cut allows the unpredictable insight to emerge: Scissors the owl in the Atropos logo intertwine (visualized by the Canadian graphic designer David Peters). Let us live up to it: Reading quietly until midnight, thinking 'till dawn. Soon the Facebook group of Atropos Press will offer 'urgent reading' of books suggested by me (whenever possible, living authors will be present). Please share this announcement widely!

Dostoevsky's last published pages, "The Speech by the Stone" at the close of The Brothers Karamazov, have routinely evaded serious comment. Like Oedipus and Hamlet, the murdered father in The Brothers Karamazov serves as the focal point of the novel's events. "The Speech by the Stone", however, is a nebulous treatise on the subject of mourning and memory that is only tangentially related to the father. In addition to sharing the theme of the murdered father, these texts also sketch the subject of mourning and memory with increasing significance. Here a spectrum of memory and its functioning are offered sliding from one end, articulate memory in Oedipus, to the other, the inarticulate variety suggested in "The Speech by the Stone." In the Oedipus myth, the oracular prophecy illustrates the first variety, highly coherent, concrete, and individualized memory instituted by way of a performative speech act. "The Speech by the Stone" describes inarticulate memory, defined by vagueness and collectively experiencing an emotion. This type of memory is depicted as possessing the potential to redeem the subject. Here, both the performative speech act in Oedipus and "The Speech by the Stone" are explicated in order to illuminate a bizarre corner of subjectivity where the father, memory, childhood, ambivalence, repetition, and mourning meet and suggest an invaluable component of subjectivity.

Since the mid-nineteenth century, terrorists have used symbolic acts of destruction-propaganda of the deed-in order to kick-start a revolution. Today, we have entered a new era where these acts have become spectacular, suicidal, and extremely lethal. Propaganda of the Dead: Terrorism and Revolution explores this relationship of terrorism to the concept of revolution and to the propaganda that accompanies it. Spectacular terrorist attacks such as those on September 11th in the United States cannot be fully understood without an in-depth analysis of the history of the intellectual evolution of terrorism, revolution, and propaganda and the relationship between the media and terrorism. Terrorists have made innovative use of the media to spread their propaganda and this symbiotic relationship between terrorism and media is explored. The thread of terrorist actions over the years, intertwined with increasing media coverage, is used to predict what our future may hold now that terrorists have become their own media generators.
