“ Emma Watson gave a smart response to being asked if she’s “white feminist” When someone on Twitter asked Emma Watson, “Are you a white feminist?” they likely were not prepared for the informed soliloquy that would follow. In a viral tweet photo, Watson explained that she wants nothing short of inclusivity and has launched many efforts to raise up voices that aren’t her own.

“ The Tragic Civilian Toll of Airstrikes in Yemen One night in July, as they slept in their home in central Yemen, Sabah and her family were awakened by loud explosions nearby. Terrified, Sabah took her family outside, including her daughter, who had just given birth. “All of a sudden the windows in our house shattered and the roof collapsed,” she told me as we sat among the ruins of her house a few days after the airstrike. When the dust settled, Sabah discovered that six houses had been destroyed and 16 people were dead, including her two brothers and their children.

Sabah’s family got caught up in the war that has been raging in Yemen since last year.

“ INDONESIA, SURABAYA : Locals gather around the carcass of a dead whale shark, caught by fishermen in the sea off of Surabaya, on the East Java island, on October 12, 2015. Fishermen originally planned to cut the giant fish measuring seven meters and weighing two tons and sell its meat but authorities from local fishery agencies arrived and negotiated with villagers to bury the whaleshark. Indonesia in 2013 has declared the whale shark a protected species, including it in the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s red list of threatened species. Despite their mammoth size, these docile sharks, the largest fish in the sea, are filter feeders and are harmless to humans. AFP PHOTO / JUNI KRISWANTO

“ On April 26, 1986, a power surge caused an explosion at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant near Pripyat, Ukraine. A large quantity of radioactive material was released.

On May 2, 1986, the Soviet government established a “Zone of Alienation” or “Exclusion Zone” around Chernobyl – a thousand square miles of “radioactive wasteland.” All humans were evacuated. The town of Pripyat was completely abandoned.

But the animals didn’t leave. And a new study, published this month in Current Biology, suggests they are doing fine. “None of our three hypotheses postulating radiation damage to large mammal populations at Chernobyl were supported by the empirical evidence,” says Jim Beasley, one of the researchers.

In fact, some of the populations have grown. These photos (mostly taken by Valeriy Yurko) come from the Belarusian side of the Exclusion Zone, and area called the Polessye State Radioecological Reserve. Kingfisher, elk, boar, baby spotted eagles, wild ponies, moose, rabbits, and wolves all make their home in the park. In some ways, human presence is worse for wildlife than a nuclear disaster.

“ Scientists have spotted a group of potentially unnatural “megastructures” in deep space Scientists, have become increasingly feverish over a new Kepler Space Telescope discovery between the constellations Cygnus and Lyra. A series of irregularities between a star and the light it emits has led at least one expert to conclude that the star is being orbited by a number of strange objects, which could be more than just asteroids.

“ One of the best-reviewed shows on Broadway right now is a revival of a musical that closed there only six years ago. Spring Awakening is based on a play about German teenagers in the 1890s. Part dark morality play, part rock opera, the musical swept the 2007 Tony awards and made TV stars of its two main leads, Leah Michele (of Glee) and Jonathan Groff (of Looking).

The current revival, by Deaf West, features a mix of hearing and deaf actors. Buteveryone signs, throughout the entire show. The deaf lead actors are shadowed by doubles, hearing actors who voice their roles. But the doubles mostly remain discreetly in the background, to focus attention on the deaf actors. Still, they look at each other, egg each other on, and comfort each other. Somehow, this adds an entirely new dimension to the show — it’s as if you can see each characters’ subconscious.
