Open up the Handball courts in New York City

They’re writing this petition to reach out to the Mayor and the New York City Parks and Recreation department

As we have moved into phase 2 Playgrounds have been reopen and chains have been taken down, They ask why not the same for Handball courts?

Children being monitored by parents will social distance and handball can be played in a singles game or solitary just to practice and relive stress.

Handball players are not the only people that use these courts and space, tennis players, volleyball, soccer and the list goes on.

This will also open up more usable space in a park for people to practice social distancing.

There are already Handball courts in the Bronx and Queens that are open to the public for play so why not the same for the rest of New York City?

As we move into the second phase we should be trailblazers in how people should social distance while playing sports and handball is a great first step in that direction.

Let’s start this petition to Mayor of New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio here — www.change.org/p/mayor-bill-de-blasio-open-up-the-handball-courts-in-new-york-city

You Can Now Be Fined Up To $1,000 For Not Following Social Distancing Regulations In NY

The NYPD and other government agencies have been patrolling NYC Parks and streets to warn people if they’re not practicing safe enough social distancing measures (at least six feet apart), and now they will fine people who aren’t listening.

Mayor de Blasio had previously authorized the use of fines in parks and playgrounds if needed, in the range of $250-500. But, in a press conference by NYS Governor Cuomo today (April 6), he said he was increasing the maximum fine for violations of State social distancing protocols to $1,000.

In the conference, he said that with the weather turning warmer, people must resist the desire to go outside.

“Frankly, there has been a laxness on social distancing, especially over this past weekend, that is just wholly unacceptable,” he said. “People are dying. People in the healthcare system are exposing themselves every day to tremendous risk…If I can’t convince you to show discipline for yourself, then show discipline for other people.”

He explained that your “irresponsibility” could put a “burden on all sorts of other people.”

“People, especially in New York City, the level of activity is up,” he said, as he pointed to a slide with photos from the weekend that still showed NYC Parks extremely crowded. “I understand that the weather is nice, that people have been locked up for a long time, but now is not the time to be lax and it is a mistake. We all have a responsibility, we all have a role in this. We said that from day one, and we have to respect the role that we must play.”

He also called for local governments to be more aggressive in their enforcement of the social distancing rules.

The majority of people who are not social distancing are handball players.

Why the hell are you still playing handball right now during pandemic crisis?

I mean, take a break.

You might not care about your own health but you are risking the health of others.

I don’t get it for those who stubbornly ignores ‘social distancing’ protocols, thus helping to further spread COVID-19.

\ køü-’vī-dî-ēt \

This isn’t about you ... It is about preventing the spread of the virus.

Continuing to play is simply selfish.

If you have to go out: *PLAY AT YOUR OWN RISK*

– Follow the social distancing rule
– Take steps to protect yourself
– Avoid grouping or close contact
– Workout by yourself
– If you’re playing handball make it a singles or practice by yourself with gloves

It’s not a hard thing to do, be the example by staying home for prevention of the spread from coronavirus to save a life for others. Don’t put your friends and families at risk!

Community spread means people have been infected with the virus in an area, including some who are not sure how or where they became infected.

Coronavirus Explained Easily:

— Anonymous player got infected yesterday, but won’t know until 14 days later.

— That player thinks is healthy and is infecting 10 person per day.

— These 10 persons think they are ok, they travel, go out to play and infect 100 persons.

— These 100 persons think they are healthy and keep infecting 1000 persons.

— No one knows who is ok or who can infect you.

Do you understand why is important to stay at home?

Be responsible. Stay in quarantine.

Handball, Paddleball, Racquetball, Pickleball & Tennis must help save lives by cooperating social distance.

NEW YORK — An order requiring most New Yorkers to stay home from work and not gather in groups went into effect Sunday night 3/22/2020 as the state quickly becomes one of the world's biggest coronavirus hot spots.

CDC Corona-Virus preventions: *Your discretion is advised*

What are the major problems is that the Handball Player’s are healthy population and they can be carriers and take this back home to their family members and their elderly families can be affected.

The plan is to SLOW the spread and Stop it.

If we don’t slow it down the effect will be much much worse therefore 100% of non-essential workforce must stay home.

You have the majority from around the world with 20% chance of hospitalization if they get that coronavirus cases but most vulnerable impacted are elderly. It spreads super easily according to CDC.

If it spreads slowly, all sick get treated and low death rate. Save one life, and it will be worth it.

If it spreads all at once, as predicted if we don’t slow it down, then many won’t get treated and hi-risk people die without treatment.

The point is to slow it down, stop from spread.

Otherwise, the system will certainly be overwhelmed soon, and many in need will not get treated.

Therefore it’s all the more reason to stop playing handball on the courts among other players and where others can catch these symptoms without proper mask where it can spread quickly.

We need everyone and all handball, paddleball & racquetball players to just pause for a minute and take a break from playing so that will slow it down. But it takes everyone cooperating and on the same page for health crisis reasons.

If we don’t overload the healthcare system this blows over and we all breathe a sigh of relief. Whew but it’ll take time.

But at this moment our current trajectory looks like we will be overloading system very soon, unless we slow it down by minimizing exposure on those courts and other players.

All we can do is try, but if nothing is done the projections from the pharmaceutical scientists working to find a cure vaccine could take awhile is scary.

Again the plan is to SLOW the spread and Stop it.

Please remain cautious of your health and other players health at your own risk from COVID-19 exposures including sharing blue-ball, gloves, goggles, towels and paddle or racquets.

Please advise of all players stay home and not play to prevent the spread of this disease.

Handball: The Story of Wales' First National Sport

200 years ago handball was a national obsession.

People travelled to watch matches and won or lost fortunes through illegal gambling. Welsh player/official Kevin Dicks' meticulous research traces the long history of this folk sport from its medieval churchyard roots, through its glory years in the 18th and 19th centuries to its modernisation today.

Today there is one surviving handball court in Wales, in the village of Nelson in the Rhymney Valley. But travel back two centuries and the game was a national obsession, with people travelling from far and wide to watch thrilling matches between the sporting heroes of the day.

Fortunes were won and lost through side stakes and illegal gambling, and countless bylaws were put in place to try to stop the game spreading to any likely-looking blank wall.

In this book, Nelson handball player Kevin Dicks’ meticulous research traces the long history and varying fortunes of this folk sport, from its medieval churchyard (and possibly even earlier) roots, through its glory years in the 18th and 19th centuries and its links with the mining industry, to its sad decline in the 20th century, and its modernisation today.

A revealing glimpse into social history and the passions of the working man, as well as a fascinating insight into what can fairly be claimed as ‘Wales’ first national sport’.

The author Kevin Dicks has been a Welsh handball player and official for nearly fifty years. He has written extensively on handball for various outlets including the BBC, the Daily Mail, the American Welsh paper Y Drych and the Caerphilly Campaign. He has also spoken on the subject abroad in Ireland, Canada and Italy and has contributed to the United States Handball magazine, and this book is the product of 22 years of trawling the archives.

A refreshing look at a sport devoid of modern commercialism, this is a lively story full of colourful characters, a revealing glimpse into social history, folk sport and the passions of the working man, and a fascinating insight into what can fairly be claimed as Wales' first national sport.
