Dr. Tamia Potter shattered a 148-year-old barrier by becoming the first Black woman neurosurgery resident at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Tennessee, US!

Her journey is nothing short of inspiring, starting as a nursing assistant at just 17 years old, then rising through the ranks as a Florida A&M University alumna to claim her place in the operating room.

Neurosurgery remains one of the least diverse fields in medicine, but Dr. Potter’s achievement is a powerful reminder that representation changes everything.

20 years of hard work finally paid off! In 2022, Clarice Phelps, an HBCU graduate, became the first African American woman to contribute to an element discovery on the periodic table. “Taking a seat at the periodic table didn’t happen overnight, it was actually a 20-year journey,” Phelps said, according to News Channel 5. Raised in Nashville, Phelps nurtured her chemistry interest from childhood experiments to earning a Master’s degree in the field. At Oak Ridge Lab, Phelps purified chemicals for atomic number 117, later confirmed as Tennessine, marking her historic achievement. Follow us for everything Black Excellence & Positivity! 🌟
