scientists are developing special infrared “cancer vision” goggles that could give surgeons a new way to spot tumor tissue during an operation. instead of relying only on what the naked eye can see, the system uses near-infrared fluorescence to highlight targeted cancerous tissue.

the technology works with special fluorescent imaging agents that can accumulate in tumor tissue. when exposed to near-infrared light, these agents produce a signal that the goggles or imaging system can detect, helping surgeons distinguish suspicious tissue from surrounding healthy tissue.

researchers have already tested fluorescence-guided goggle systems in laboratory models and in early human studies. in breast cancer studies, the technology was able to help visualize lymph nodes and assess tumor margins during surgery.

this doesn't mean doctors can simply put on goggles and instantly see every cancer cell. the technology is still being developed for different cancers and clinical situations, but it could eventually help surgeons find hidden tumor tissue more precisely and remove cancer while preserving as much healthy tissue as possible. 🥽🔬🧬

a remarkable treasure from a 300-year-old spanish shipwreck was recovered off florida’s treasure coast in 2015. divers discovered 51 gold coins and about 40 feet of ornate gold chain lying beneath the shallow waters.

the treasure came from the legendary 1715 spanish treasure fleet, which sank during a hurricane on july 31, 1715, while carrying gold, silver, and other valuable cargo back to spain. the discovery was valued at more than $1 million at the time.

one of the coins was especially rare—a 1715 royal gold coin known as the “tricentennial royal.” the discovery became one of the most notable finds connected to the fleet and helped reveal more about the enormous amount of treasure lost in the disaster.

even after three centuries, the waters off florida continue to reveal pieces of this lost spanish fortune. and remarkably, new discoveries from the same fleet are still being reported today. 🌊🏴‍☠️🪙

arizona is trying something unusual with its irrigation canals: putting solar panels directly over the water. the gila river indian community’s casa blanca canal project uses about 2,556 panels stretching across nearly 2,800 feet of canal.

the panels generate renewable electricity while also shading the water below. that shade can reduce evaporation, which is especially valuable in arizona’s hot, dry climate. the project is expected to produce about 1.31 megawatts of power, or at least 2.26 million kilowatt-hours each year.

there’s another interesting benefit: water beneath the panels can help keep them cooler, potentially improving their power generation. the design also uses space above an existing canal instead of requiring a large new area of land for the solar array.

it’s a fascinating example of combining two important needs—renewable energy and water conservation—in the same piece of infrastructure. if the pilot continues to perform well, similar solar-over-canal projects could become more common in dry regions. ☀️💧🔋

a sunset on mars looks nothing like the colorful sunsets we see on earth. instead of turning the sky orange or red, the sun can appear surrounded by a striking blue glow as it sinks toward the horizon.

the reason comes down to the atmosphere. mars has a very thin atmosphere filled with extremely fine dust particles. these particles scatter sunlight differently from earth’s atmosphere, allowing more blue light to remain concentrated around the setting sun.

nasa’s mars rovers, including curiosity and perseverance, have captured these unusual blue-toned sunsets from the planet’s surface. seeing the same familiar sun behave so differently on another world gives scientists a fascinating look at how atmospheres shape what we see.

it’s a beautiful reminder that even something as ordinary as a sunset can look completely different depending on the planet you’re standing on. 🌅🔴🪐

at just six years old, a belgian boy named lucas was diagnosed with diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (dipg), a rare and extremely aggressive brain tumor. doctors initially gave his family a devastating prognosis because the tumor develops in a critical part of the brain and is difficult to treat.

lucas later took part in the biomeDE clinical trial in france. after years of treatment and follow-up, doctors found no visible trace of the tumor on his scans when he reached his early teens. his case was described as the first known child to achieve such a long-lasting complete remission from dipg.

the story is extraordinary, but the wording “cured of terminal brain cancer” needs some care. it refers specifically to this rare type of brain tumor, not to brain cancer in general, and researchers continue to study why lucas responded so differently.

lucas’s case has given researchers valuable hope and another reason to investigate new treatments for childhood brain tumors. his journey shows how much can still be learned from a single remarkable medical case. ❤️🧠

a british-nigerian influencer has died after a cosmetic procedure in bangkok, with a uk coroner linking his death to a fatal pulmonary embolism. igho “tiny” ubiribo, 43, underwent a pe**le enlargement procedure involving hyaluronic acid filler and lidocaine on march 5, 2026.

hours later, he developed chest pain and collapsed while receiving a massage. he was taken to a hospital, where doctors suspected a pulmonary embolism. despite more than 100 minutes of resuscitation attempts, he died in the early hours of march 6.

a post-mortem examination found material consistent with the injected hyaluronic acid in his lungs, and the coroner concluded that the injection caused the fatal embolism. thai authorities have since launched an investigation into the bangkok clinic, including its licensing and safety practices.

the case is now drawing attention to the risks of elective cosmetic procedures and medical tourism. even procedures marketed as minimally invasive can carry serious complications, making qualified medical care and proper safety checks extremely important. ⚠️

deep beneath idaho, scientists work inside a remarkable facility built for nuclear research. the hot fuel examination facility at idaho national laboratory contains a massive 70-foot-long main hot cell filled with purified argon gas and surrounded by four-foot-thick concrete walls.

the thick shielding isn't just for protection from the underground environment. inside, researchers remotely handle and examine highly radioactive nuclear fuel and materials using mechanical manipulators, allowing them to work without entering the cell itself.

the argon atmosphere also serves an important purpose. because argon is inert, it creates a controlled environment that helps prevent sensitive nuclear materials from reacting with oxygen while scientists study fuel and materials after reactor exposure.

what looks like a mysterious underground chamber is actually a highly specialized scientific workspace—helping researchers understand how nuclear fuels behave and develop safer, more efficient designs for the future. ⚛️🔬

some rivers in the arctic are turning a startling shade of orange, and scientists say the cause may be hidden beneath the ground. as permafrost thaws, previously frozen minerals can become exposed to water and oxygen, allowing iron and other metals to enter streams.

the phenomenon has been documented across northern alaska. a 2024 study identified 75 streams in the brooks range that had recently changed from clear to orange, while newer observations have expanded that number to more than 200 affected streams and rivers.

the orange color comes largely from oxidized iron—essentially creating a rust-like coating in the water and along streambeds. researchers have also found higher concentrations of other trace metals, lower oxygen levels, and more acidic water in affected streams.

what looks like a strange natural color change could have serious consequences. scientists have observed declines in aquatic insects and fish in some affected waterways, raising concerns for wildlife, drinking water, and communities that depend on these rivers. 🌎🧊🟠
