Recently named one of London’s most influential people by the Evening Standard, artist Yinka Ilori is known for his eye-popping, bold and playful designs grounded in both personal narrative and heritage.
The North London–raised visionary studied furniture and product design at London Metropolitan University and has since transformed discarded and secondhand chairs into work inspired by the Nigerian parables told to him as a child. Ilori tells A/D/O what captivates him about the hidden emotional histories of chairs — taking us through both his studio and artistic process in tandem. “We kind of take chairs for granted. When you sit on the train or in a café — [...] these chairs have different emotions and feelings —and we don’t know what this chair has soaked in.

Koffee has had a promising start to 2019 – effectively stunning the reggae world as a promising female newcomer. After returning home to Spanish Town, Jamaica to film her recent video for “Throne” early this year, the 18-year-old Reggae prodigy has finally released her long-awaited and highly-anticipated debut EP, Rapture.

Infused with all the reggae vibes one could hope for in the young artist, from dub instrumentals to ragga and dancehall-infused riddims, the young artist has shared an extremely well-produced and polished first project. Previously she released the cuts “Toast” and “Throne,” now returning with an equally powerful vibe to make up her 5-track release. #koffee #rapture #reggae #jamaica #koffeerapture

Michael Brun and the other young artists of today's Haiti are working to once again take Haiti's power into their own hands. The celebrated producer spent 2017 transitioning his sound from one of standard electronic music to a beautiful blend of traditional Haitian influence and modern sensibility. He introduced his new style with singles "Wherever I Go" and "Gaya," and today, he builds on the direction with "Bayo," a tropical, warm dance song featuring local MCs and musicians.

Brun announces a new live concept, Bayo. Bayo means “to give” in Haitian Creole, and is based off the impromptu street parties, typically soundtracked by mobile sound-systems, and the traditional rhythms of Haitian RaRa. Brun has organized several around his hometown, Haiti’s capital city, Port-Au-Prince. These parties are essential to Haitian culture, providing an infrastructure that allows music to be heard and bubble up, artists a platform to DJ and perform, and a traditional gathering point for communities to come together and dance. @bayoayiti #culturetouch #bayoayiti #culturedisruptors #haiti #creativeforchange

Projects 106: Martine Syms, the first US solo museum exhibition by Martine Syms (b. 1988, Los Angeles), is an immersive installation including photographs and staged objects, and centering around a new feature-length film, Incense Sweaters & Ice.
Shot on location in Chicago, Los Angeles, and Clarksdale, Mississippi, Incense, Sweaters, and Ice follows three protagonists—Mrs. Queen Esther Bernetta White, Girl, and WB (“whiteboy”)—as they navigate dramas of surveillance, moving between watching, being watched, and remaining unseen. Accompanying the film is a suite of photographs sized to standard American movie posters and a metal mesh structure inspired by the geographies of the Great Migration.
Using video and performance, Syms examines representations of blackness and its relationship to narrative, vernacular, feminist thought, and radical traditions. On the occasion of the exhibition, Syms will also premiere a new lecture-performance as part of MoMA’s educational programming.
To access additional media from Incense Sweaters & Ice, download the artist's art app, wyd rn, developed by Brent David Freaney at Special—Offer.
After downloading the app, follow the instructions on screen, and hold your phone over the artwork in the gallery.

AT THE END OF FEBRUARY, the Whitney Museum of American Art announced 75 artists selected to participate in the 2019 Whitney Biennial. Among them is Alexandra Bell, an artist with a master’s degree in journalism from Columbia University.

Rather than using her journalism degree to report the news, Bell is harnessing her media literacy skills to consume and critique it. The multidisciplinary artist focuses on the front page design of newspapers, primarily The New York Times. She highlights headlines that are not fit to print and points out bias in image selection, layout decisions, and narrative details.

Similar to a newsroom editor, she marks up the pages, then recreates and enlarges them, and posts her work in public—displaying it side-by-side with the originals. The series is called Counternarratives. The works give viewers the opportunity to compare and contrast visual messaging and problematic portrayals. by

Studio Visits: Dreamhaus LA • Nikkolos Mohammed, 27, and Mike Reesé, 28, founded Dreamhaus LA in South Central Los Angeles with the goal of using fine art to inspire and support the city’s young creatives. The pair decided to create the non profit art collective after graduating from LA’s Otis College of Art and Design back in 2014, and since then, they’ve partnered with local elementary schools to host discussions and workshops on visual art. The group has also launched an annual toy drive to provide students with art supplies and handmade clothing, while their latest effort was a December 2018 charity exhibition at the California African American Museum in Los Angeles. In addition to their community outreach, Mohammed and Reesé also use
their new Dreamhaus studio just south of Downtown LA to create their own original artworks. Mohammed’s pieces utilize techniques like collage, portrait painting, and assemblage – a form of three-dimensional visual art boasting compositions made from found objects. Reesé meanwhile borrows elements from taxidermy to create representational works made of
acrylic paint and flowers. Dreamhaus is a Los Angeles-based 501c(3) art nonprofit organization founded in 2014 by two Otis College of Art and Design alumni, Nikkolos Mohammed and Mike Reesé. Since its conception, Dreamhaus has been dedicated to implementing arts as both an educational tool and a viable career path, working alongside South Central Los Angeles public schools by way of lectures and after-school workshops. In addition, Dreamhaus hosts an annual toy drive, which includes apparel and art supplies to benefit students attending partner schools.

Dreamhaus believes this model mentality is vital positive reinforcement and should be introduced to children in their early creative and educational development. #dreamhausla #culturetouch #hypebeast #art #artforchange #art #community #culture #creativityforchange

Hank Willis Thomas and MASS Design Group were selected to create the landmark dedicated to the Kings. King Boston, which is also supporting a documentary film and additional programming that promotes equity, has announced the winner: conceptual artist Hank Willis Thomas and MASS Design Group, perhaps best known for their work on the National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, Alabama.
Called The Embrace, the 22-foot-tall sculpture represents the hands of King and Scott King, evoking images of the couple—and other protesters—arm-in-arm in peaceful marches for civil rights as well as the power of physical togetherness in declaring resistance against injustice. “The Embrace” also embodies Scott King’s emphasis on the transformative power of empathy—and putting it into action. Visitors to the sculpture will be readily reflected in its mirror-finish bronze, making them part of the installation. #hankwillisthomas @hankwillisthomas #theembrace #martinlutherkingjr

Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, CAPERNAUM (“Chaos”), a new film by Nadine Labaki about the journey of a clever, gutsy 12-year-old boy, Zain, who survives the dangers of the city streets by his wits. He flees his parents and to assert his rights, takes them to court suing them for the “crime” of giving him life.
CAPERNAUM follows Zain, a gutsy streetwise child as he flees his negligent parents, survives through his wits on the streets, takes care of Ethiopian refugee Rahil (Yordanos Shiferaw) and her baby son, Yonas (Boluwatife Treasure Bankole), being jailed for a crime, and finally, seeks justice in a courtroom.

CAPERNAUM was made with a cast of non-professionals playing characters whose lives closely parallel their own. Following her script, Labaki placed her performers in scenes and asked them to react spontaneously with their own words and gestures. When the non-actors’s instincts diverged from the written script, Labaki adapted the screenplay to follow them. This movie wroth your time; one of the best foreign Language this year. #capernaum #foreignfilm #culturetouch #culturalflim

Nike's First City-Inspired SNKRS* Pop-Up Shop
Like the app, the pop-up, located at 711 10th Street NW in Atlanta, will release a rotating selection of limited-edition styles from January 26 through the end of March. But unlike the app, the selection is specific to Atlanta’s vibe, like styles from The Ten collection and popular Air Force 1 drops. The space also houses an Unlock Box, a futuristic vending machine with accessories and pin-sets, and hoodies and tees are also available at the pop-up.

More local opportunities for customization and events are found in in Nike’s Super Bowl Content Studio (open from January 31-February 2 at 760 10th Street NW), which is stocked with limited-edition jerseys, hoodies, T-shirts and an accessory bar that offers a design palette inspired by local Atlanta artists, including FRKO. The space offers the opportunity to book a photography session with photographer, videographer and Atlanta native Cam Kirk to sharpen professional-style portraits and landscapes skills. There’s also a turf-covered training space ripe for working out.

The Brief:
Convert casual athletes into more dedicated ones by encouraging and building frequency to form sports into a habit.

THE BACKGROUND
Since when did sport become a fashion trend? Some people are happy with finishing one run or satisfied by simply dressing up for the gym without breaking a sweat. Nike wanted to reveal the true sports culture of Shanghai – There Is No Done. In this city, enough is never enough - there’s no high enough, no far enough, no strong enough. Every second, someone is constantly setting a new record and breaking a new finish line. No one wants to say “I’m done”.

THE STRATEGY
Sweat as Currency = 2X Sport. Nike wanted to motivate people to move and keep on moving by enabling them to buy products using hard-earned sweat as currency to purchase even more sport. Do Sport to Earn More Sport.

THE IDEA
To get Shanghai moving like never before, Nike hijacked this year’s Shanghai Marathon to launch Shanghai City Attack “Never Enough”, an integrated offense centered around a digital activation that motivated casual, everyday athletes to become more dedicated athletes. The online to offline experience came to life through a 24-hour H5 mobile site – The “Shanghai Never Done Shop” – an experiential 360º retail space that allows you to purchase Nike products, services, and experiences using your “sweat as currency” a.k.a. “Sweat Coins”, powered by your Nike+ data.

THE EXECUTION
The Shanghai Never Done Shop enabled you to purchase cross-category products, services and experiences through a series of immersive 360º retail shops – play for Kyrie 5s at the Basketball shop, sign up for a 4 week Youth Camp at the Football shop, skate for Janoski Kicks at the Nike SB shop, workout to earn your spot at the Nike Super Workshop in the Training shop, see creative talks and maker workshops at the NSW shop and qualify to run the next marathon experience since you missed SHM’18 at the Running shop.

Simply scan the QR code on WeChat, Weibo, and Nike retail store to access the H5 store. Everyone has a chance to use their sweat and movement to shop for products, services, and experiences that peaked their interests. Pick the sports category and enter #nike
