Live event production is not for the faint of heart. What we saw Sunday night was a vivid example of the vital importance of the mastery of all production details by the executive producer. One small lapse - a lack of backups, a connector that's not taped down, and importantly in this case, a failure to rehearse for various 'what-if' scenarios such as an error in award management -- can and did bring down a show, and forever color the narrative of the 89th Academy Awards.
While PWC has suffered enormous reputational damage, they were one of many stakeholders who had to perform perfectly, with no chance of a do-over... This is the art of successful live event management, whether your audience is a global one, or fifty of your most important customers.
