It’s been a couple years since we released Lage Lund’s Ashes LP and it continues to unfold its delights. In a way it’s reminiscent of Lee Konitz’ Dovetail album from 1983 on . Both are trio dates where the band improvise simultaneously in an evolving conversation which skirts the conventional individual solo-over-chorus convention. It takes musicians with extreme intuition and familiarity to pull off these kinds of all-at-once improvs and Lage, Tyshawn Sorey-who has been very complimentary of this recording-and Matt Brewer are just the men for the job. We always thought this record deserves more shine but it’s a grower and has lots of legs. Anyway we were reminded of all this as we stumbled on a French podcast which featured the record last year. One of the paradoxes of jazz is that to become truly virtuostic you need to be both supremely talented and hard working at a musical practice which yields little commercial reward. Despite that perversity, like dinosaurs, there exists a class of jazz musicians so dazzlingly proficient and creative, experiencing their playing by itself is our favorite way to appreciate their brilliance. The foregoing is our motivation for a series of solo instrumental LPs which meticulously document six of the most blazingly impressive masters of their instruments. But don't get it twisted, these are not ONLY academic documents. They are proper albums with ebb, flow and strong narrative themes. All are available for sale at our website and comprise a critical part of our discography.

Some of the most exciting sounds in modern improvised music are being made on the continent these days and we have our very own crack quartet at the vangard of that verdant scene. Bassist, composer and bandleader Omer Govreen appeared in our lives a few years after we started JMI and remains the only unsolicited submission we've turned into an LP. His Maya record is always on rotation on our decks and his bristling creativity is a reminder of the best of the culture to which we want to contribute. His quartet of compatible musical innovators and searchers recorded Maya's follow-up, entitled All Things Equal in January 2024 and you may stream or download it starting Friday with the truly immersive LP available for pre-order on our website now and in stores by Fall. This will be our final new release of 2025 and we believe in this record so deeply we know it will sustain us through years end. .

For eight years we’ve been spending and slaving to create the best all-analog jazz records we can. We’ve released 25 vinyl records, each of which we believe will stand up in the decades, centuries and millennia to come as classics of their type. But, we are not jazz OR analog snobs in our personal lives. And, we’ve been in the music business since at least 1994. So a couple years ago we created Chuh Music to release digital and non-jazz titles. Until yesterday those releases were limited to one LP, one CD and one streaming only album which are co-releases with and one CD and one LP which are projects. Apres ca, le deluge. As of today you may stream a tranche of albums from Chuh artists like super obscure 80s and 90s singer-songwriter Java Jel and band Fellaheen. This is music on which we grew up and still holds great meaning and sounds. In the coming months and years we will release over 100 albums of all types of music and levels of artists from beginners to unknowns to the outright weird. We know that given the intentional musical myopia of JMI, a lot of this stuff will not make sense to fans of this label. And that is completely ok. Here we will be keeping it purely analog and laser-focused on vinyl. Over at Chuh things are about to exponentially expand into one of the weirdest and most expansive labels extant. So head on over to .music on IG or check out the Chuh link on the JMI website and to quote “if you get confused listen to the music play.
