I love pearl but she absolutely did everything wrong on her own
Pearl from Pearl is being compared to characters like Nikki from Obsession and Jennifer from Jennifer's Body because all three characters are shown as violent young women with chaotic emotional lives. They all have this mix of loneliness, obsession, jealousy, and a desperate need to be loved or noticed, which is why people naturally pair them up. The films also share similar aesthetics, with characters who can appear glamorous, tragic and disturbing at the same time, setting them apart in modern horror.
But there is a huge difference between Pearl and the other two characters. Both Jennifer and Nikki were under the heavy influence of possession or supernatural forces when they did the things they did, which creates some distance between who they originally were and the violence they committed. Pearl had no excuse in the supernatural, however. Everything she did was from her own resentment, isolation, ambition and unstable mind set. That's part of why Pearl is so disturbing to many viewers. The film shows how years of repression, disappointment and feeling trapped slowly turned her into someone dangerous without any outside force controlling her, which makes her character feel more grounded and realistic.
