🚨 7-Year-Old Boy Died with Head Trapped in Car Window While Mom Was Passed Out
ATLANTA, Ga. — A Georgia mother has been arrested after her 7-year-old son died earlier this year when his head became trapped in a car window.
Kandice Grace, 32, was taken into custody on Monday, September 29, and is facing charges of second-degree murder and second-degree cruelty to children in connection with the death of her son, Mazi Simmons, according to authorities.
Police were called to an Atlanta residence shortly before 9:30 a.m. on April 6 after receiving reports of an unresponsive child.
Responding officers found Mazi in the back seat of his mother’s vehicle, his head caught in the window. The child was seated beside two younger siblings and was “not alert, conscious, or breathing,” according to an Atlanta Police Department press release.
Mazi was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Investigators allege that Grace was “passed out in the driver’s seat” at the time of the incident. The warrant states that while she was unconscious, Mazi became trapped in the back seat window.
A witness told police that Grace had stopped by his home around 10 p.m. the previous night. She allegedly left her children in the car, saying she didn’t want them to come inside, and then left shortly after.
The next morning, the witness reportedly saw Grace’s vehicle still parked nearby and noticed the 7-year-old’s head hanging out of the window. He began banging on the car to wake Grace, according to the warrant.
When officers arrived, they found Grace inside a neighbor’s home holding her youngest child. Investigators said she appeared disoriented and “kept passing out while sitting up.”
A search warrant for her blood and urine was later executed, and toxicology tests came back positive for opioids and THC, according to the warrant.
Grace is currently being held in the Fulton County Jail as the investigation continues.
