Kalakars

Kalakars Kalakars is a collective of writers, filmmakers, and actors, striving to disrupt the status quo of South Asian representation in American film and television.

Kalakars is a group of writers, filmmakers, and actors committed to developing and encouraging stories by and about South Asians in the United States. The lab functions as a collaborative workshop environment and a resource and talent pool to support the emerging independent voices of South Asian and South Asian-American cinema. At our bi-weekly sessions, we workshop 10-15 pages of scripts that ca

n be entire shorts, skits, or excerpts of features. The material is read by the actors in the group, and then we provide feedback to the writer to help her/him develop the work further.

Wakhri is about a widowed school teacher in Pakistan who becomes a viral sensation overnight when she accidentally unleashes her unabashed opinions on social media. This newfound fame as an unlikely influencer comes with its own challenges as she has to navigate archaic mindsets and secret identities while raising her ten-year-old son in a world where a woman’s right to have a voice and own their own space, physical or online, is a constant challenge. The film draws inspiration from the bravery of individuals like Qandeel Baloch, Pakistan’s first social media celebrity who was strangled to death by her brother for bringing disrepute to the family’s honour.
