JUST IN: Adelaide Zoo is mourning the loss of one of its most ‘iconic’ residents who has been euthanised.
After a recent health check revealed the 21-year-old had multiple age-related complications, Chappi the Hamadryas Baboon is being remembered as a ‘devoted grandmother’ and having the ‘biggest personality’.
Keepers say her cheeky habit of stuffing her cheeks with popcorn during enrichment sessions will be missed.
Following her passing, the baboon was returned to the troop so her family could mourn and grieve which is an essential part of their social bonds.
Adelaide Zoo says with Chappi’s passing, the troop’s dynamics are naturally beginning to shift and visitors may notice subtle changes as Quasi, who has been seen regularly grooming with alpha male Tomkay, steps into the role of dominant female.
