In 1981, Ferrari put one of its Formula 1 cars against something far faster in a straight line: an Italian Air Force fighter jet.

At Istrana Air Base, Gilles Villeneuve lined up his Ferrari 126 CK against an F-104 Starfighter for a series of acceleration runs. Ferrari reportedly removed aerodynamic elements to reduce drag and give the F1 car every possible advantage.

Over the shorter runs, Villeneuve’s turbocharged Ferrari managed to beat the fighter jet off the line, creating one of motorsport’s most memorable car-versus-aircraft showdowns.

Eight years later, the Italian Air Force gave Ferrari a remarkable reminder of that day.

In 1989, it presented the company with a retired F-104G Starfighter, MM6546, painted completely in Ferrari red. The aircraft carried special “4-27” markings, combining Italy’s 4th Wing with Villeneuve’s famous Ferrari racing number, 27.

The jet became more than a gift.

Ferrari raced a fighter jet in 1981 — and eight years later, the Air Force gave them one painted Ferrari red.

Lewis Hamilton has owned some extraordinary modern supercars, but one of the most recognizable cars in his collection came from a completely different era.

His candy-red 1967 Shelby GT500-style “Eleanor” Mustang was built by Classic Recreations, a Shelby-licensed specialist known for creating modernized versions of classic American muscle cars.

The build reportedly started with a genuine 1967 Mustang body before being stripped, reinforced and rebuilt with Shelby-inspired bodywork, upgraded suspension and modern brakes.

Under the hood sat a fuel-injected 427-cubic-inch V8 producing roughly 545 horsepower.

Reports have placed Hamilton’s total cost for acquiring and commissioning the car at around $1.3 million, although that figure has not been officially confirmed.

Despite its value, Hamilton didn't simply hide the Mustang away. He was photographed driving it around Los Angeles, sometimes with his beloved bulldog Roscoe riding alongside him.

For an F1 champion accustomed to cutting-edge race technology, the Shelby represented something very different.

A 1967-style American muscle car became one of Hamilton and Roscoe’s most recognizable rides.

Bruce Wayne could have driven almost anything in Batman Begins, but his Lamborghini came with a detail that made the choice almost too perfect.

In the 2005 film, Christian Bale’s Bruce Wayne arrives in a Lamborghini Murciélago Roadster, using the exotic V12 supercar as part of his billionaire public persona.

But the name carries a hidden connection to Batman.

“Murciélago” means “bat” in Spanish.

The Roadster packed Lamborghini’s naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V12, producing around 580 horsepower and giving Bruce Wayne a suitably dramatic alternative to the Batmobile.

Nearly two decades later, Murciélago Roadsters have become serious collector cars. Values vary dramatically depending on specification, mileage and transmission, with desirable manual examples commanding especially strong prices.

After a night of drinking, three friends in China reportedly knew getting behind the wheel was a bad idea.

So they came up with a very unusual alternative: push the car home themselves.

Instead of leaving the vehicle behind or arranging another way home, the three men reportedly got out and began physically pushing their Volkswagen along the road.

Technically, nobody was sitting behind the wheel.

But the sight of three intoxicated men pushing a full-sized car down the street quickly attracted attention and eventually went viral online.

Their unusual solution did at least avoid the far more dangerous decision of driving after drinking. But pushing a vehicle along an active roadway can create its own serious risks, especially at night.

The images became popular because the logic was both ridiculous and strangely straightforward.

They knew they couldn't safely drive home — so all three got out and pushed the car instead.

A dramatic exit from a Miami car meet ended with a Chevrolet Corvette Z06 on the sidewalk.

Video from a Miami Cars and Coffee event shows the white Corvette accelerating onto the road as spectators watched from nearby.

The rear of the car immediately stepped sideways as the driver attempted a powerslide. For a moment, it appeared the Corvette might straighten out, but the slide quickly developed into a complete loss of control.

The Z06 then crossed toward the sidewalk and struck multiple road signs, bringing the attempted show-off exit to an abrupt end.

No serious injuries were immediately reported in connection with the crash.

Modern Corvette Z06s produce 670 horsepower, making throttle control especially important when that power is being sent through the rear wheels.

What was supposed to be an impressive departure from the meet lasted only a few seconds.

One powerslide attempt was all it took to send the Z06 off the road.

In the early 1980s, seeing a Japanese sports car in police colors was still highly unusual in America.

But Florida Highway Patrol actually put the Datsun 280ZX into service.

The cars received FHP’s distinctive black-and-tan paint, State Trooper markings and emergency equipment, transforming Datsun’s sleek two-door sports coupe into one of Florida’s more unusual patrol vehicles.

Sold in America from 1979 through 1983, the 280ZX used Datsun’s 2.8-liter inline-six, with a more powerful turbocharged version joining the lineup for 1981.

Its time with FHP also came just before the agency moved more aggressively toward performance-oriented pursuit cars.

In 1983, Florida Highway Patrol began ordering Ford Mustang SSPs, specially equipped versions of the Mustang designed for law-enforcement work and high-speed highway patrol.

The Datsun therefore represents a fascinating moment between traditional American police sedans and the faster pursuit cars that followed.

Long before police Mustangs became familiar, Florida troopers were already patrolling in Japanese sports cars.

For Dolly Parton, a Cadillac wasn't simply a luxury car. It was part of what she imagined success in country music should look like.

When she arrived in Nashville in 1964 at just 18, Parton had little money but a very clear picture of becoming a star: big hair, sparkling outfits and, eventually, a Cadillac.

As her career took off, she followed through.

Cadillacs became a recurring part of Parton’s life and public image. One particularly important example was a 1972 Cadillac Eldorado, reportedly given to her by longtime collaborator Porter Wagoner.

Naoko Nishimoto made herself a promise: when she turned 80, she would stop driving and find the right home for her beloved Mazda RX-7.

She had bought the RX-7 Type RB S new in Nagasaki in 2001 after developing an interest in Mazda’s rotary-powered cars. Over the following decades, she drove it nearly 50,000 miles while carefully looking after it.

When her story was featured by NBC Nagasaki, it went viral, reportedly attracting more than 800,000 views and around 400 offers from people interested in the car.

But the offer that mattered most came from Mazda itself.

The company invited Nishimoto to return the RX-7 to the same dealership where her journey with it had begun. Mazda CEO Masahiro Moro reportedly promised that the company would preserve the car and the story behind it.

So after more than two decades together, Nishimoto handed her RX-7 back to the company that built it.

She didn't simply sell her old Mazda — she gave it back so its story could live on.

Rather than constantly appearing in exotic supercars, Bale has repeatedly been photographed with an older Toyota Tacoma, reportedly a 2003 model he bought around the time his career was rapidly growing.

And he apparently kept it for more than two decades.

The Tacoma wasn't rare, flashy or particularly expensive. It was simply a practical pickup known for durability — something Bale could drive without attracting the attention that would come with a six-figure exotic.

That contrast is what makes the truck interesting.

Southern California’s car community is mourning James Wehr, co-founder of South OC Cars & Coffee, who died at just 27 years old.

Wehr was one of two people who died after a 2019 McLaren crashed in Irvine. Police said the car accelerated from a traffic light shortly after midnight before the driver lost control, struck a curb and then a tree. The impact split the McLaren into two pieces.

But Wehr was known for much more than the cars he drove.

He helped transform South OC Cars & Coffee into a regular gathering where enthusiasts could meet, share their cars and feel welcome regardless of what they drove. Friends and members of the community remembered him for his enthusiasm and the connections he helped create throughout Southern California’s automotive scene.

What began as a shared passion for cars became a community that reached far beyond the weekly meets.

James Wehr was only 27, but the car community he helped build will carry his impact forward.
